While it has always been historically difficult for Black and/or queer actors to win Oscars, there is one advantage available to them when it comes to Oscar campaigning: there are more events for them to attend and be celebrated. In addition, if you’re an actor with a theatrical or recording career, you have options to perform that your non-singing competitors do not. As a Black, British, queer recording artist with a Broadway background, Wicked star and Best Actress nominee Cynthia Erivo availed herself of every single opportunity at her disposal to get out in front of photographers and serve an unforgettable look. No one campaigned as hard as she did this year, in as many eye-popping looks as she did.

Like her co-star Ariana Grande, she engaged in a lot of theme-dressing this year, sticking pretty closely to an Elphaba-appropriate black/green color scheme. But unlike her Glinda, she managed to find more interesting variations on the theme. In other words, unlike Ariana’s succession of very Glinda-like dresses, very few of the garments Cynthia wore could be mistaken for an Elphaba costume. She’s an exuberant dresser with maximalist preferences, so it was much easier for her to figure out how to do an Elphaba theme without lapsing into cosplay. It seems likely that she’ll sport black or green on the big night, just as it’s practically assured that the look will have an unusual shape and be styled to within an inch of its life. Your girl does not go small.
