Wicked star Cynthia Erivo swung by the Critics Choice Association’s Celebration of Black Cinema & Television to pick up the Best Actress Award. We are thrilled that she ditched the Elphaba green she’s been wearing relentlessly for months. She still kept things pretty witchy, though.
We realize she sported all those green dresses to to match film’s pink-and-green branding and marketing materials, but it always struck us as a little odd that Ariana was promoting the film in Glinda dresses and Cynthia was doing it by dressing in Elphaba’s skin color. To our way of thinking, this was a missed opportunity because, as the above shows, you have so many more fun, chic, sexy ways to interpret the Wicked Witch’s iconic costume in a high-fashion way. She looks gorgeous. For once, the manicure really has a chance to shine instead of looking like it’s fighting some over-the-top maximalist gown for attention.
