Oscars 2026 Countdown: Jessie Buckley-ology

Hamnet star Jessie Buckley always had a dicey relationship with the red carpet, giving the impression that she either wasn’t a fashion girlie or that she had a more art-punk approach to style that doesn’t lend itself well to certain red carpets. Looking over her major red carpet appearances over the last year, it’s clear she was campaigning from the minute the film opened and her team had a very specific image and plan in mind.

If we had to sum up her style, it would with the somewhat backhanded “restrained awkwardness.” There’s a real sense that she’s trying to project that prestige actress style that tends to define awards season…

Minimalism in shape and color ruled her choices…

Looking over the results, one after another, we can’t say we’ve responded well to most of it.

To us, it always felt like there was some sort of tension underlying these choices; a sense that she was chafing against the restrictions she’d settled on.

Some of the choices felt like they didn’t really represent her.

While others felt very much like her own preferences having a say.

That was the story of her red carpet campaigning this year: a constant bouncing back and forth between very staid and sober looks that speak of prestige…

We suspect very strongly that she does a lot better with casual day looks than the endless parade of gowns and formalwear awards season tends to require.

We expect her Oscar night look is going to be along these lines: restrained, but with an awkward or unusual element, and highly polished.
