Once again, we can use fashion to read the tea leaves. Hamnet stars Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley have a spotty red carpet history, but we can tell from their BFI London Film Festival premiere outfits that they’re on their best style behavior.
And if we had to guess, we’d say that, of the two of them, she’s the frontrunner for awards consideration based solely on how extravagantly she dressed here.

This isn’t terrible. It’s just… fine. The jacket is nice but it looks a little small on him and it doesn’t take well to cuffing. That watch looks a little too delicate for the style of outfit.
Jessie Buckley in Roksanda
We haven’t changed out minds on fringe (which we hate) or on marabou-like “feathers,” (they’re overused in fashion), but this is pretty spectacular for her. The style is formal, with a grande dame undertone, but the skirt is exuberantly modern and graphically exciting. The proportions are flattering and her usual preference for low-key styling was absolutely the right way to go. We still don’t love those crumb-catcher bodices, but this one doesn’t bug as much. Basically, despite this look having elements we tend to dislike, we think it’s all working really well for her.
