Okay, hold on a second, we’re gonna need a carafe of coffee and a crate of Red Bull before we get started. We suggest you do the same.

Have we been a bit mean about Maestro star and Best Actress nominee Carey Mulligan’s stripped-bare approach to her awards season style? Absolutely. We can only be as God made us and a couple of gay red carpet bloggers are simply never going to love her flick-the-hair-behind-the-ears approach to formal style.

As always, you can click through the photo headings to read our original thoughts on each look. Despite our whining, we wouldn’t expect her to wear a lot of makeup or jewelry if she doesn’t want to. We’re not even going to ding her for her funereal lack of color all season.

It’s interesting to note how she seems to hit the glamour spot every now and then. The styling is never quite up to the dress, but despite her puritan leanings this season, she’s had a history of bright, sparkly fashion on the red carpet.

She’ll even take a weird risk now and then.

Ultimately, we get the impression that a lot of her awards season style tactics were about tamping down on too much exuberance and glamour. They’re trying to go for a prestige actress vibe, but there’s always this disconnect between what she’s wearing and how she’s styled.

We think there are ways to get the balance right, such as here, where the stark drama of the dress works well with the clean and under-played styling.

We think there’s a way to do minimalism without being boring or looking like you’re half-dressed.

We think her choices led her down a path that skirted dowdiness and staleness a little too often.

And we wouldn’t be surprised if she didn’t show up on Oscar night wearing something in the more glam, less puritan mode. She’s done it before.
