Carey Mulligan is the type of actress who’d make a string of pearls part of her awards campaigning wardrobe. That’s not a read, that’s a fact. Make of it what you will. She likes her fashion a little on the prim and demure side. Also not a read, although we’ve gone on record many a time as people who find her approach to be dull and forgettable. Until now…?
Maybe?
We honestly think the runway version is much more interesting, although we don’t think formal shorts would’ve been right for the occasion – or her, for that matter. This is sort of interesting, sort of awkward. We’re not opposed to pearls, but we do tend to think it lends the look a somewhat stale grand dame vibe. She’d have been better off finishing it with a big honking piece of obnoxious jewelry. Given the retro vibe, some sort of brooch might have worked. Anyway, we neither hate nor love this. We sit in complete ambivalence. It’s up to y’all to make the final call, so let’s hear it, for the first time this year…
