The AFI Awards were this weekend and we have so much catching up to do that we’re just gonna plunge you right into it. Hang on!
Ali Wong in Issey Miyake
LOVE this. It’s sharp and incredibly well suited to her.
America Ferrera in Monique Lhullier
The dress is fine, but it needs much more aggressive styling and accessorizing. You can’t go Country Club in a strapless leather dress.
Ayo Edebiri in Dior Couture
It’s cute, but she looks like she’s about to try to sell us something.
Bella Ramsey
LOVELOVELOVE. We’re glad they stepped their game up and found an appropriately formal style for themself.
Bradley Cooper
It’s a fine suit, but he always looks so unkempt lately.
Carey Mulligan in Bottega Veneta
The style equivalent of stifling a slight yawn behind your hand.
Charles Melton in Ferragamo
The coat is gorgeous. Everything else he’s wearing is sad.
Cillian Murphy
Terrible. Zero effort or style. You’re in the fashion olympics, sir.
Dominic Sessa in Tom Ford
This kid’s going places. He really needs to land that high fashion menswear ambassador bag asap. Saint Laurent or Gucci would be idiots not to snatch him up.
Ebon Moss-Bachrach
Meh. He should be setting off those baby blues better. And he needs an undershirt.
Emily Blunt in Louis Vuitton
This is a really fun and interesting take on the ladytux, but we LOATHE the choice of shoe with it. Gold pumps or sandals would have been perfect.
Emma Stone in Louis Vuitton
You can tell she’s starting to take the campaigning seriously when her fashion choices get more conventional, which is no easy trick when you’re repping Louis Vuitton. She looks okay, if a little boring.
Florence Pugh in Stella McCartney
We know the Bitter Kittens tend to hate any Stella McCartney look on sight, but we LOVE this. She needed to have the waistband let out a weensy bit, but the rest of it works beautifully. Her hair and makeup are chef’s-kiss perfect.
James Marsden in Dolce & Gabbana
Bitch still doesn’t age, but we’re gonna have to give this one a thumbs down. The proportions are weird and that sweater should be black.
Jeremy Allen White
He always dresses like Charlie Chaplin wearing a sheer shirt. It’s such a weird style, especially for someone who’s been making such a show of his body lately.
Julianne Moore in Alaïa
We think it’s possible to wear a leather jacket over a leather dress, but they both need to be streamlined and lightweight. These pieces are neither.
Leonardo DiCaprio in Zegna
Acceptable.
Lily Gladstone in Burberry
Can’t say we’re loving this one. The print makes it look a little cheap.
Margot Robbie in Vintage Chanel
It’s like she’s slowly transitioning away from Barbie cosplay by still dressing like a fashion doll. This is cute, but borderline cutesy, if you know what me mean.
Meryl Streep in Givenchy
Don’t love the closure on the jacket, aren’t convinced the color is right for her, hate the shoes.
Natalie Portman in Christian Dior
Very pretty in a sweet but not saccharine way. We might have rec’d a pair of sandals that pull one of the colors out.
Natasha Lyonne in Rodarte
There are a few references so overused in the style commentary game that we do our best to avoid deploying them (such as “sister wife” for any modest dress or “Carol Burnett Gone with the Wind sketch” for any dress with shoulderpads), but sometimes, the reference is so strong and so obvious, we have no choice but to say it. So yes, she’s ready for Studio 54. She’s ALWAYS ready for Studio 54. Having said that, we hate the blue lace.
Pedro Pascal in Valentino
Nope. Absolutely not. We’re all for challenging menswear conventions or even redefining formalwear, but this is not cute at all. Put on something that doesn’t look like prisonwear if you’re representing your award-nominated self or show.
Quinta Brunson in Louis Vuitton
Super cute. Feels more like a spring dress than a winter one, but it’s not an issue.
Reese Witherspoon in Dior Couture
Meh. It’s okay. Natalie Portman’s was prettier. This print is too obscure and the shoes are distracting. She could really use a style update.
Robert Downey Jr. in Givenchy
This is pretty cute, but his insistence on wearing puddling pants makes him look silly. Also, we would recommend a lighter touch with the Lady Clairol products.
Sarah Snook in Dolce & Gabbana
It’s just okay on its own merits, but considering she wore the worst dress at the Golden Globes, we can only see this as a very welcome course correction and improvement.
Selena Gomez in Giuseppe di Morabito
Love it. No notes.
Tracee Ellis Ross in Ferragamo
We would like this so much more in any color other than white, which tends to give it a hospitality uniform feel.
Willem Dafoe
As always, moisturized and thriving.
