Oscars 2024 Countdown: Emma Stone-Ology

There’s a tendency to assume that Poor Things star and Best Actress nominee Emma Stone steps out in weird fashion on the regular because of her contract with Louis Vuitton, the current house of weird fashion (mainstream division). This year, there was also a tendency to assume that she was pulling a Robbie (new red carpet term!) and showing up at all of her events in weird looks as some sort of homage or cosplay of her character Bella Baxter. While we have no doubt that there’s some truth to the former assumption and much less to the latter, the fact remains that Emma Stone steps out in weird fashion because she actually likes wearing it.

Not that she’s necessarily avant garde in her choices. There’s little to call shocking or jaw-dropping about the designs she wear. There’s just a sense of oddness or imbalance to them – and she was dressing like this long before this film was made.

No, the choices aren’t necessarily all that strange, but a lot of them seems oddly suited to her, either in color or style or shape.

We don’t always love her choices, but we do think they’re fairly reflective of how she’s been managing her career.

She’s been at the game a good while and she’s already got one Oscar under her belt. She varies between semi-low-key professional looks…

… and wildly off-beat, largely unflattering styles that don’t look like normal red carpet fare at all.

The operative word in that long-ass sentence is “normal.” Like the roles she tends to go for, her fashion choices seem almost deliberate in how they avoid typical ingenue or leading lady styles.

There’s an impish sort of quality to how she approaches fashion, like she’s winking at us. She knows some of her choices are pretty out there. That’s why she chooses them. But she’ll snap to formation and pull out something in the more traditional mode when she wants to. For Oscar night, she’ll probably straddle that line, sporting something in the conventional glamour mode, but with some odd twist to it. It’s how she showed up the last time she was nominated.
