Florals for Spring may not be considered groundbreaking anymore, but several of the Met Gala attendees took that old standard to new, three-dimensional levels. Floral prints? Tired. Festooning yourself with an entire garden? That’s the Met Gala.
Janelle Monáe in Christian Siriano

Janelle and Christian took green fashion to a much more literal place and we can’t quite tell if all the tech foofaraw is supposed to be a reference to the tech bros in attendance, but we suspect it’s just Janelle being nerdy, as per the usual. We wish we could say we like this, but like Heidi Klum’s marble statue, it rendered her so immobile that it comes off way more like a costume than a dress. It’s bulky and heavy, whatever message it’s trying to send seems kind of obtuse, and bottom line, it’s just not pretty.
Naomi Osaka in Robert Wun

This is beautiful and strange. We love those sheer demon hand gloves, which lend the look a mythic feel. One thing that stands out about this look, aside from the beautiful botanical elements and how sparingly they’re used, is how striking the shapes are and how they make the whole look. She took the coat off to show off the slinky red gown she had underneath, but that was much less interesting.
Naomi Watts in Christian Dior

We don’t know, you guys. Putting aside our dislike of black-backed florals, we can say that the use of the flowers is pretty and we appreciate their bold brightness against the contrasting dress. But if you take the flowers away, you’re not left with much of a design. The dress is pretty, but terribly basic, and we don’t think she’s really the type who can work a flower crown effectively.
Odessa A’zion in Valentino

Well, that’s one way to do it. It’s certainly dramatic and different. We love the color story for her and the flowers are gorgeous, but that is way too much boob for the Met Gala and we think the whole look would improve tremendously by just giving her a proper bust to wear. Sitting the girls on top of a tightly cinched half corset isn’t doing her any favors. The coat is stunning and we wonder if we’d have liked this more if she just wore it like a normal person.
SZA in Bode

We can’t say we’re fully in love with the head dress that SZA is sporting, but the point here is that she clearly is. The colors looks stunning on her and we like this look a lot for its maximalism, but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t have used a few passes from the magic editing wand. We tend to think. given the head piece, that she didn’t need to go too hard on the rest of the jewelry. In fact, she should have ditched most of it.
