Boys in leather! This is a thing of which we heartily approve in the general sense, but we’re not entirely sure if it works at an event like the Met Gala. We don’t know what inspired this micro-trend, except that this has been the most leather-heavy spring in celebrity fashion we’ve ever seen. Some came working a distinctly faschy sort of vibe, some came working more of a street look, and some just came gay as hell. Let’s assess!
Bill Skarsgård in Thom Browne

We won’t deny it’s got a weensy bit of an SS officer vibe to it, which is a bit ominous, but the suit is gorgeous and the styling is impeccable. Love the jewelry and the hair. The coat is pretty hot, we admit, but it’s also literally hot — as in, why would you wear this in the first week of May in New York? He’s lucky the weather’s been unseasonally cool lately, but it still seems like an odd choice to make outerwear the focal point of your Met Gala look.

Again, it’s a gorgeous coat — and we appreciate him providing a handy illustration of how different very similar items come off depending on how they’re styled and who’s wearing them. This doesn’t have the Nazi undertones of Bill’s look, but it does feel similarly odd to make leather outerwear the whole point to your Met Gala look. It’s a chic and understated ensemble. The hair looks great and the skin is glowing. We just think it feels a little casual for the event.
Luke Evans in Palomo Spain

Well alright then, Mr. Homosexual! He’s currently appearing as Dr. Frank N. Furter in The Rocky Horror Show at Studio 54, so he’s clearly feeling particularly queer at the moment. He looks hot and we won’t get huffy about someone working a classic leatherman look at the Met Gala when it’s rendered as fabulously as this.
Nicholas Hoult in Prada

The brooch and his very pretty face are keeping this look from coming off extremely threatening, but even without those softening elements, we have to admit it’s extremely hot and well executed. The fit is perfect.
Patrick Schwarzenegger in Public School

We have to give him credit, because he routinely steps out in looks much more interesting and harder-edged than anything we would have assumed for him. He could skate by wearing country club preppywear and be just fine, but he tries to be interesting, which is admirable. This is all sounding a little more condescending than we mean to, but our point is that we admire the risk, but we don’t think this style suits him at all. Impressive commitment, however.
