Academy Museum of Motion Pictures Opening Gala: Tessa Thompson in Dior Couture: IN or OUT?

Posted on September 28, 2021

Miss Tessa is here to pose that perennial fashion question: Just how many feathers are too many feathers?

We think we like the idea of this dress more than the reality of it. We have no issue with a feather-heavy dress and we think this one is designed well enough that it mostly keeps its shape on her without making her look like… well, a pile of feathers (although the bodice is probably a bit too full). We think her hair and makeup look great and coordinate well with the dress. Now the quibbles. They mostly come down to color. The neutral colors of the dress make it look way more like grass or straw than like feathers. It tends to make the dress look very heavy, which is kind of the opposite effect a feather dress intends. And while we think a belt is warranted here, we really don’t like that rather plain black one. If the dress itself were black we probably wouldn’t mind, but your eye goes straight to her waist when it should be going to her face.

Are we wrong? We’re asking. In other words:
