Kittens, we were wrong. It may seem like we never admit it, but we do, constantly! Just rarely out loud, so to speak. We’re afraid this occasion must warrant it, however. We originally chose to spotlight this outfit, worn by Riley Keough to the Cannes Film Festival premiere of All of a Sudden, to point and laugh and suggest that it’s all far too drab a look for a Cannes film premiere. But then we discovered three things. First, she’s here as an attendee and she’s not in the film. Second, it’s an Alaïa, which is like a totally important designer. And third…

The longer we looked at it the more we kind of liked it. Despite the overwhelming blackness of it and the unusual shape, it still has a chic sort of beachside feel to it, which is helped by the thong sandals and the low-key styling. We don’t think the belt quite works and the styling is way off. We can understand wanting to keep things clean and low-key, but that’s such a declarative style of dress that it calls for a little consideration as to how to wear it. We think a ponytail would’ve been great, along with some killer shades and some jewelry that you can perceive from more than ten feet away. But we don’t hate this.
