It’s time once again for one of our favorite annual traditions, our “Ology” posts, where we take a look at how certain Oscar nominees navigated awards season through their fashion choices in the often futile hope that we can make some sort of prediction as to how they’re going to dress for the big night. First up, one of our favorite fashion stories to cover in the last year, the rise of Sinners star and Best Supporting Actress nominee Wunmi Mosaku as a red carpet force to be reckoned with.

But that description sells her a little short, because she was always a strong presence on the red carpet, since long before this campaign. There are some pretty clear throughlines in all of her choices.

In short: the lady loves herself some bold colors and expansive shapes and silhouettes. She likes to announce herself in the most declarative way possible.

She has occasionally dabbled in chic, restrained elegance, nailing it every time.

But she really comes alive when you put her in something that demands your attention and can’t be missed.

Because Sinners came out a year ago, and because she started treating this film as the launching pad for an awards season campaign, she’s had the longest campaign of any nominee, including her co-star Michael B. Jordan. The lady simply wasn’t going to miss an event, which tends to make this post something of a document of her pregnancy and how she incorporated it into her style choices. She still sometimes returned to prestige actress eleganza…

But she took the opportunity to be comfortable where and when she could. And if she couldn’t be comfortable…

… she’d make damn sure she looked sickening.

There’s a wide range of styles in her campaign, which means there are one or two missteps, like the above, but you can easily pick out the similarities in the looks she prefers.

Endless variations on a set of themes and elements that work for her. And she’s offered up something of a master class as to how to dress a pregnant body with high-impact formality.

In terms of predicting what she might wear on Oscar night, we think she could go in any of her preferred directions: comfort, chic restraint, or bold high style.

But given her last few appearances, which each turned out to be more polished than the last one, we think it’s clear that she took her style in a more formal direction as she got closer to Oscar night.

We think, given the progression show here, that she’s likely to be wearing a big name designer, but with elements — boldness in shape and color, a killer hairstyle that elevates the look — that are particularly her own taste. She’s barely set a foot wrong once for nearly a year of red carpet appearances. so we expect to be dazzled.
