It happened, darlings. Our favoritest thing in the whole wide world — or at least the part of it we’ve tasked ourselves with covering. See, we’ve always approached red carpet coverage not from the classic “What was she thinking?” mode or the much bitchier “That dress makes her look (fill in the body-shaming blank)” mode but from a storytelling perspective. What is she saying? Where is he in his career right now? How are the box office numbers forcing a course correction? Why do we get the impression they’re distancing themselves? That sort of thing. But our favorite storyline of all is the one where a relative newcomer, one for which the world of high fashion hasn’t necessarily, traditionally made much space, is thrust into a high fashion spotlight which she quickly learns to navigate until the big houses start offering the high-end merch. In other words, here’s Sinners star Wunmi Mosaku, absolutely slaying it in custom Louis Vuitton:

To be clear, she’s been slaying it all along and there’s no reason to treat an established luxury goods brand as more worthy of her time than, say, the Nigerian designers she’s been highlighting during this campaign. But we felt the same way about Lily Gladstone, when she started showing up in custom couture with high-end labels. It signals an arrival at the very top of the profession and it also forces major houses to consider clientele that they don’t necessarily place first in their design or business plans. It’s not “better” that she’s wearing a gorgeous Louis Vuitton, but it’s definitely worth noting when one of the world’s oldest luxury brands commits itself to giving a pregnant Black woman anything she wants. She looks amazing.
