At first glance, you might think Jenna Ortega’s look at the Met Gala represented another of those instances where attendees ignored the theme and went for standard gala wear.
But the theme was “Tailored For You,” which means she actually embodied it in two ways. Not only is this custom gown clearly fitted perfectly to her, but it’s also made out of pattern-maker rulers, in a salute to the craftspeople who make all of the fabulous pieces you see walking the Met Gala red carpet. It’s a clever idea, although the design is pretty basic; essentially a riff on the iconic American Express card dress worn by Lizzy Gardiner to the 1995 Oscars (albeit in a much sexier and appropriately more fitted style). We tend to think this sort of thing is a little gimmicky and closer to drag or costume design than fashion design, but she looks sharp and hot. Love the hair. Those heels are insane.
