Met Gala 2025 Red Carpet Rundown: Great Gowns, Beautiful Gowns

We struggled a bit with how to classify this rundown. Once again (sorry for the ad nauseam part), the Met Gala isn’t a costume party and while the Costume Institute exhibit is a salute to Black male dandies, the actual theme for the Gala was “Tailored For You.” Considering how broad that phrase is, this should have been a fairly easy theme to interpret, but a whole bunch of attendees opted out of the theme completely and went for the kind of standard gownery you’d see at the Oscars, which is kind of disappointing. So we considered calling this one “The Basics” or “The Didn’t Bothers,” but what we really wanted to title this was “Hey White Ladies!” But that probably wouldn’t have gone over well. Anyway, line up for judgment, pale gals in gowns.

Ironically, she is the absolute queen of ignoring the theme every year and she’s the one person we point to every time we announce that it’s not a costume party. It’s an okay ensemble, but she looks like she’s getting married for the fourth time. And after all this time, she still poses terribly for pictures.

She said this was a salute to Andre Leon Talley and we could not “girl please” her hard enough in response. It’s fine, but it’s incredibly basic.

She wears more interesting and photogenic outfits walking down the street.

This seems to miss the point of the evening to an almost aggressive extent. It’s giving Barbara Bush.

The gown is pretty, if a bit basic. The panty hose cape is hideous.

Natasha Lyonne in Alexander McQueen

It looks gorgeous on her. The color really pops and she can handle that annoying collar really well. It’s too flimsy, though.

Nicole Kidman in Balenciaga Couture

Her hair looks great. It’s a pretty chic dress, but it’s also pretty forgettable.

Pamela Anderson in Tory Burch

Stiff and heavy, this dress absolutely does not coordinate well with a bare face and that awful hair.

Sadie Sink in Prada

This is gorgeous and makes us think she should indulge in a goth romantic style a bit more.

Shakira in Prabal Gurung

Meh. This Barbie color needs to be retired.

She never looked so good on the red carpet. It’s a gorgeous gown, based on something Kim Novak wore in the film The Legend of Lylah Clare. She’s playing Novak in an upcoming film about her affair with Sammy Davis, Jr., which tends to make this choice a bit of an eyebrow-raiser. Putting aside the self-promotion, on a night that’s all about saluting fine tailoring and iconic Black male style, you choose to pay homage to a white woman who was known for dating a Black man? Girl, that’s a bit sus.
