If you asked us to sum up Michelle Williams’ red carpet style while promoting The Fabelmans and campaigning for her Oscar, without reviewing any of the pictures, we’d call it “awkward.” It seemed all year long that the lady we once dubbed Princess Twee-as-Fuck seemed to be either in a style rut or attempting to get out of one and not quite hitting the mark.

But when we compiled the looks for this post and cut out the semi-formal ones (girlfriend still loves a mini shift dress) and the ones from when she was in her third trimester (simply because her major consideration at that point was comfort), we think her gowns were not as bad as we’d assumed. Despite the wide range in styles and shapes, she’s been remarkably consistent.

For the most part, she’s favored coverage, with ruffles, in a palette of black, red or gold.

She’s not completely against the idea of playfulness or exuberance…

But she tends to hover in a sort of basic screen-siren-to-prestige-actress style zone.

We can’t say she’s hit the mark on any of her looks this season, but when you compare her to someone like Ana de Armas, who was all over the map, you can see exactly where her preferences tend to lie.

Her last few looks have gotten  little more streamlined, favoring an exposed shoulder and a slim silhouette…

Or favoring a more sedate chicness. We don’t think we can predict which way she’ll go, but she seems to always be pulled in one of two directions: fun, cutesy glam or grande dame.
