Prince William and Catherine Duchess of Cambridge kicked off their tour of Belize in celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee to a somewhat rocky reception when they had to hastily change their tour plans after several local groups protested their arrival. You wouldn’t necessarily know that by Cathy’s style choices, which are brightly photogenic and worth discussing. For the first day of her tour, she leaned into an old favorite and returned to a method of tour dressing that may not have served her well in this instance.

This is what we like to call the tea towel or fashion doll version of Kate. This is so identifiably her style that anyone else wearing it would get compared to her. More importantly, it’s so very royal in tone that a whole range of female family members have likely worn something similar in public at any time over the last 60 years. The lace is a nice touch which takes the look to somewhere a little tropical-appropriate without looking like she’s trying to wear a folk costume. Which brings us to our next item on the agenda.

This is a lovely dress that suits her well and is probably a nod to the flag of Belize. We don’t necessarily expect a lot of agreement on this, but we think the look comes too close to cosplay for us. When she goes to other countries in Europe, it’s common to see her dress in colors appropriate to the local culture and to wear jewelry that signifies some connection. It’s not wrong that she’s doing the same thing here, but it sticks out because she’s sporting items – specifically the earrings and bag – and dressing in a manner that she would never choose to wear for an official appearance back home or in a European country. Even the dress is a little far off from her go-to styles. She’s dressing more like a tourist than a royal on a state visit. It’s not a crime, but the difference in approach is notable.
