It was all big hats and questionable color pairings as Queen Max and King Willem-Alexander packed up princesses Amalia, Alexia and Ariane in the royal station wagon and headed to Dokkum for King’s Day celebrations.
Would you ever see King Charles in a half-zip? Would Queen Camilla ever go ice-skating in a dress? No and no. The Dutch royals remain our pick for a fantasy hang. Maybe it’s all an act — their jobs consist of constantly putting one on — but they really do come off like the fun royals. The dress is fine, although we don’t think that marigold color is the best choice for her. The cape and shawl really don’t go. The hat is fun, and we’ll take something like this over Princess Cathy’s succession of silly fascinators. What’s the point of being a queen if you can’t go out in obnoxious hats? Princess Amalia opted for a business-like suit and that red looks stunning on her. Princess Ariane’s white ensemble is really cute; sporty but dressy in a way that doesn’t feel like a royal cliche. Princess Alexia’s cropped jacket and killer boots also take her look somewhere away from royal cliches. It’s the best of the outfits here.
