Independent Spirit Awards 2021: Carey Mulligan in Prada

Our Oscars countdown “Ology” posts are extremely limited this year because of … well, you know. To address a question that may get thrown our way when we post the final one later today, the reason why we didn’t cover every actress nominated is because only a few of them hit the promo trail hard enough to give us the number of looks we needed to make an assessment. Carey Mulligan has done a lot of press covering Promising Young Woman, but she hasn’t had the fashion presence that your Violas and Amandas established. That’s not particularly surprising because she’s been known to point out the oppressive beauty standards often imposed on actresses and also because her style appears to be low-key to a point that it generally doesn’t make for the kind of pictures people tend to click on. Her awards show appearances this year were accompanied by colorless gowns with no memorable or discernable elements. We don’t think she lacks style so much as she isn’t interested in pretending that she’s into showy looks. Still, she had fun with her recent SNL appearance and she wore a kinda cute (but also colorless) dress on Fallon Tonight recently. But it’s pretty clear that the world of red carpetry and high-fashion expectations is not a focal point she wants to emphasize too much in her career or public image and that is absolutely her prerogative.

Which is why it’s always so rewarding to see an actress like this really land on a fantastic, declarative look that checks off all the boxes and feels like she’s sticking to her guns. We love this. The Independent Spirit Awards have always been a fairly funky (from a style perspective) predecessor to the Oscars and it’s the last place to look to for any predictions about how the nominees will dress, but we hope she found something for the big night that suits her as well as this does.

But okay, yes. The belt is terrible.
