Lupita Nyong’o’s Promo Style for “Us” is More Subtly On-Point Than You Think

Miss Lupita, serving up Coat Porn and the perfect verge-of-spring day look at the same time as she saunters out of Good Morning America. Because girlfriend can juggle all sorts of fashion balls at once and make a rather brilliantly subtle point while doing it.


She’s been in a super-matching Barbie mode for her day looks and then switching things up and sporting slightly off-putting horror-show looks for the night appearances. It’s a really effective way to tell a story about your film without being really obvious about it. Just as in the movie, she’s portraying two different characters during the promotional tour; bright happy daytime Lupita and dark, threatening night-time Lupita. In addition, she’s been working her way through a “mismatched prints” theme in a great deal of her promo looks; another subtle way of making her look slightly off in all her appearances. Big kudos to her and Michaela for pulling this off in such a subtle but effective way. Together, their ability to interpret fashion to tell a story or send a message is top-of-the-game.
