Queen Max got vivid and surprisingly swanky, with a detour into Mumsy Town, as the Dutch royals’ trip to the Czech Republic continued, just before it was all cut short and they had to head home because of a little thing like the Dutch government collapsing. Anyway, dresses!

Oof. That’s not great. There’s not a lot you can do to make us love a vivid green lace dress, but all of the styling choices tend to make it worse. That hat is terrible. The cardigan only adds to the mumsiness. The neutral shoes are fine, although we think a more tone-on-tone approach for the whole look would serve it better. Line the dress in green, sport a darker green pair of pumps, Princess Cathy-style. Rip all the leaves off the hat and leave the cardigan in the limo. We still wouldn’t like the dress, but it would be improved significantly.

The sort of look is where she really shines. It’s dramatic and regal, it looks fantastic with a tiara and a ton of jewelry, it flatters the hell out of her, and it completely avoids the mumsiness and fussiness often associated with Euro style. If we’re being blunt (not exactly a rare occurence), we think the embellishments are overdone and the proportions on that sleeve tend to throw the balance off, but it’s such a dazzling style for a royal that we don’t much care about the quibbles.
