Meghan Duchess of Sussex (or, in the interests of rigid and vehemently documented fairness, “Duchess Megs,” since we threw out the first “Princess Cathy” in a long time earlier this week) made a rare red carpet appearance at the Paley Media Center Honors, both as a member of the awards committee and a very good friend to honoree Tyler Perry. We’d love to tell you she got her Hollywood Glam on or even that she added a touch of royalty to the proceedings, but unfortunately, she went the boring route again.
Shapeless, without benefit of embellishment or even one interesting design element, paired with the most demure jewelry and basic sandals, with hair and makeup that would be perfect for a casual brunch. Catherine may be dull in a fussy, conservative sort of way, but she has a definable style, with a preference toward particular elements. Whatever else you can say about the Princess of Wales’ style, it definitely doesn’t lack a personality or a point of view. But Meghan’s style is defined by what it lacks: shape, color, visual interest, styling. She’s obviously free to dress how she wants, but considering how important PR is to the Sussexes, we’ve always found it not just frustrating but downright strange how stubborn she can be about avoiding the use of fashion at moments like these, where it’s absolutely called for. Even Kate knows that a red carpet requires more sparkle and interest.
