As always, in order to cover as many awards show red carpet looks in a short period of time as humanly possible by two humans, we look for little trends among the stars, in order to group them together and do a little driveby judging. Given the rise of neutrals in popularity this year, we’re actually a little surprised to see how few of the attendees showed up in all-black. We’re also a little surprised – pleasantly so – to see that several of them managed to not be boring about it, which is always a risk when you go colorless for the red carpet.

Note that we said SOME of the looks managed not to be boring. This one didn’t. There’s more going on with the design than is evident at first glance, which is always the number one issue with wearing all black on the red carpet. It sucks up the light so you can’t see the details. Even so, with our keen eye and a lot of pinching and expanding, we can see all of it pretty well and… it’s just not good. Also: it’s past time for a hair rethink.

She’s a lady who loves minimalism and while we think it’s a waste of everything God gave her to keep going out in these featureless frocks, we can at least note that this one is lovely in its simplicity and clearly of very high quality. The jewelry is nice, but too subtle for our tastes.

This is actually pretty fantastic for her. It’s got a witchy vibe that really suits her. The necklace is gorgeous but it clearly doesn’t coordinate well with that neckline.

She rarely gets it wrong on the red carpet, but this might be a personal best for her. Just stunning.

Donatella knows how to make a black dress anything but basic. The fit is fantastic and the pleating takes it to a whole other level. The skirt feels a little like an afterthought, if we’re being honest. She could’ve used a statement piece of jewelry.

We hate bows on dresses – especially big obnoxious bows – but this is drop-dead gorgeous.

Except for the slight pull across the hips, the fit on this jaw-dropping. We can remember not that long ago when she clearly wasn’t getting access to things like custom designs from major houses. Success looks spectacular on her.

Fabulous. That’s the best side cutout we’ve ever seen, although we’d have liked it if it were just a little smaller.
