There almost doesn’t seem to be a point to doing a retrospective on Oppenheimer star and Best Supporting Actor nominee Robert Downey, Jr’s style because…well…it’s probably easier just to show you:

No matter what else you can say about his style, it is astoundingly consistent. Based on all of the above – and a full decade-plus of covering him – it’s safe to say that RDJ will wear an interesting suit, possibly in a bold color. It will be rumpled and the pants will be way too long on him. He’ll sport transition lenses, too much hair dye, and lifts in his shoes. That’s not a read, that’s just a fact. Or at least it’s very good conjecture based on the evidence. However, we would be doing him a disservice if we left it there. For one, we suspect his Oscar night look will be as close to impeccable as you’re ever going to see from him. We’re also happy to note that, late in the game, he discovered that heeled boots look much better with suits than kicks with wedge heels shoved inside them. And finally, we wouldn’t want to sound too dismissive of his style. We’ve been complaining about it for years – to the point where he was always our go-to example whenever someone tried to claim we never criticize men harshly for their style choices. But he deserves credit for always keeping his style interesting and for understanding that an actor – even a superhero movie star – is an artist and should avoid trying to dress like an executive. It suits and reflects his personality, which is what good style is supposed to do. He’s just not a details kind of guy.
