We’re taking a close look at the awards season campaigning style of some of the most fervent campaigners among this year’s acting nominees! You can get caught up on previous entries here. You absolutely should, you know. Get caught up, that is. When you’ve done that, join us for a discussion on the style choices of Best Supporting Actress nominee and Oppenheimer star Emily Blunt.

We detected a sense of floundering in her choices this season. She’s always been a fairly reliable red carpet presence, but this year, after the strike ended, her choices often didn’t feel right for her and over time, it never quite seemed like she had a game plan.

We saw a lot of sparkle and exuberance that felt more in the Kate Beckinsale mode. A lot of pieces didn’t seem to suit her or fell a little flat.

It’s not that she unveiled a series of disasters. It’s just that everything felt like a bit of a dud somehow.

But okay, yes. There were some disasters.

Mostly, we got the sense that she was unsure how to promote this role or nomination. She was never considered a frontrunner and her career is extremely well-established at this point, so a campaign like this one might seem like it doesn’t have much point to it.

Mostly, she’s showing up in high-end, photogenic looks. They’re rarely awful, but the choices often feel random.

You can look at someone like America Ferrera or Carey Mulligan and you can easily see how they thought about their wardrobe and what kind of image each actress wanted to project. We get no sense of that from Emily’s choices.

There’s no crime in taking a less studied approach to your awards season style, but when we look over this lineup of semi-okay to weirdly ill-suited looks (such as the second Beckinsale-ian turn above), it doesn’t feel… we don’t know… confident? Assured?

There’s only so far you can go with attempting to divine what people were thinking when they chose their looks, but we’ve been covering her for nearly a decade-and-a-half and we never got this sense from her before. If you read some of the interviews she’s given about her role in Oppenheimer, she’s very clear that she felt intimidated and unsure about her suitability to it. We don’t think it’s completely out of line to suggest that those feelings found their way into her style choices for the promotion of it.
