Met Gala 2026 co-chair Nicole Kidman brought along her daughter Sunday Rose as her date for the night and kicked off the evening by establishing one of its two main approaches to the theme of the event.
With a Costume Institute exhibit of “Costume Art” providing the framing, the dress code this year was the rather broad “Fashion as Art,” which left the attendees with two possible style roads ahead of them: do you come dressed in fashion or do you come dressed as art? Nicole, along with a whole bunch of other attendees, opted for the fashion approach, which made this one of the tamest Met Gala red carpets in literally decades.

And while we realize this isn’t a popular take, we’re thrilled by this development. We certainly don’t mind when people opt to get outrageous for the Met Gala, but in recent years, the spectacle tended to overwhelm the celebration of fashion and art that the evening is supposed to be. No, the design isn’t an outrageous costume or art piece, but that just makes it of a piece with the vast majority of the Met Gala’s red carpet history. We’ve been saying this for years (and reiterated it in our podcast last week), but there’s nothing wrong with showing up to the Met Gala looking fabulous. This color looks amazing on her, that’s the best her hair’s looked in ages, and we just can’t get mad that Nicole Kidman came to the Met Gala looking stunning.

We can’t say we love the shape of this, but the colors and the embellishments look very pretty on her and we like that she didn’t do a Mommy and Me matching moment but she also didn’t go on some sort of rebellious tangent. They look appropriately coordinated without looking alike. The earrings are a little silly, but it’s the Met Gala and she’s young.
