In putting together this retrospective of Barbie star and Best Supporting Actress nominee America Ferrara’s awards season style choices, we were surprised to discover that she was a lot more consistent than we remembered. It felt to us like her style was all over the place – and to be fair, there were some deeply questionable choices – but when you see it all together, it’s pretty easy to see where her preferences lie.
In Lela Rose at the Palm Springs International Film Awards
She spent most of the Barbie promo tour doing her best not to work anything that could be called Barbiecore (which we felt was smart). She stuck to a similarly low-key sophisticated sort of style during awards season.
In Dolce & Gabbana at the Golden Globes
Although she loosened up enough to allow a little more glamour to sneak into her restrained sense of style, which we also consider smart,
In Moschino at the Governors Awards
It still held onto that clean, classic, no frills feel, but it had more of a sense of fun to it.
In Monique Lhuillier at the AFI Awards
Some looks could’ve used more aggressive styling.
In Erdem at the BAFTA Tea Party
And some even showed an exuberance that felt like it popped up out of nowhere.
In Alberta Ferretti at the Critics’ Choice Awards
But she stuck to a toned-down color palette and simple, flattering shapes throughout most of it.
In Alex Perry at the Oscars Nominees Luncheon
Even this, which had a little bit too much to it for our tastes, still sticks to a basic flattering, semi-modest sort of style. We think we might know why her choices tend to be so restrained, though.
In Coach at the People’s Choice Awards
Because when she abandons them, the results are not good.
In Christian Dior at the Screen Actors Guild Awards
Missteps aside, she’s a pro who uses the red carpet like a pro, which is why it’s not always exciting, but it’s consistent and it positions her as someone smoothly on her game. Restrained elegance is her sweet spot.
In Patou at the Producers Guild of America Awards
She seems to get this, but she also has that playful side that always peeks through now and then. We think her Oscar night getup is likely to be considerably more exuberant than anything we’ve seen here. She knows she’s not likely to win and she’s been using this time to shore up gigs for herself, so the Big Night will be all about branding, self-promotion, and showing up like a star.
