It’s time to give the non-doll on the insanely well-styled Barbie promotional tour a little spotlight time, wouldn’t you say? In a somewhat clever ploy to keep up with the fashion cosplay that her co-stars have been executing (none more so or better than Margot Robbie, of course), America has also decided to dress in a nod to her character as the human woman who lives in the real world.

To do that, she has not only rigidly avoided pink, she’s stayed away from pastels and the majority of her looks have been pants. The style is sharper and has more edge than the candy-colored couture Margot’s been enjoying and the effect has worked really well for her. She’s been wearing her hair very sleek throughout the tour, perhaps knowing that stars like Issa Rae and Margot would be sporting a lot of waves and curls. We LOVE the braids. The suit is pretty fantastic. We usually prefer color on the red carpet, but just look at how much color surrounds her in all of that promotional sludge. This is savvy.

Love this one too, even though we tend to think head-to-toe leather can be pretty risky for picture-taking situations. But the style feels very modern – unlike the deliberately retro styles of Margot’s choices – and the shape really suits her. Again, we think it’s smart on her part, not just as a way to keep up with her co-stars while remaining distinct, but also as a way of representing and standing out as a Latina on a tour that could have come off like a salute to white blondeness. She’s serving edge, attitude, and perhaps a subtle response to the retro-femme image that Margot is deploying.
