Oscars 2024 Countdown: Colman Domingo-ology

Ostensibly, our Ologies posts (like our “In or Out” posts, an ancient T Lo holdover from our Project Runway recapping days) are supposed to be about taking a close look at an Oscar nominee’s campaigning wardrobe and trying to divine how they’re going to dress on the big night. But we’ll be the first to admit that this method of tea leaf-reading doesn’t exactly have a pristine record of prediction-making. The reason for that is a simple one. A campaigning wardrobe is about securing that bag. An Oscar night ensemble is about celebrating the bag you’ve secured. Usually, the most hardcore of campaigners and attention-seeking of nominees will tone things down considerably for prom night. The voting’s over. The Oscars ceremony is a victory lap. Today, we’re looking back at the race.

And may we just say that no one, absolutely not one other person, ran that race as hard this year as Rustin star Colman Domingo.

We are ready to call his 2023/24 awards season run one of the greatest fashion campaigns in Oscar history – at least among the male nominees.

You can click through all of the picture headings to read our assessment of each outfit as it was unveiled, but for this retrospective, we’ll just note that we haven’t seen Black male style excellence on this level since Chadwick Boseman was promoting Black Panther.

The looks were sharply masculine with a heavy dose of dandyism. Jewelry remains a hugely important element of each look.

We loved how he mixed his classic menswear styles with moments of queer Black flamboyance. When you’re using fashion to secure awards consideration, you’re better off working those things no other nominee would dare try and/or be capable of working. You’re not gonna see Paul Giamatti or Bradley Cooper in something like this.

He also has a fine sense of how to play with proportions in a way that feels elegant and sophisticated.

And he’ll take fashion risks, which is an unusual thing for a male nominee to do.

What we love most about his style is that it’s playful. Joyous. It feels like a celebration.

And the grooming is always flawless. The skin glowing, the hair shining, the edges sharp enough to cause a paper cut.

No man has ever reached for that Oscar statue in such consistently enjoyable and unexpected high style. As for the big night? We expect a fairly classic tuxedo but with some gorgeous jewelry and footwear choices. This is why you nominate gays. We’re so good at accessorizing.
