Darlings, it’s time to wrap things up on our 2023 red carpet coverage with the FINAL FIVE in our listing of our favorite red carpet looks of the year. Part One, Two and Three are waiting for you, if you haven’t been following along. Now let’s kick off Part Four with the most obvious of choices, shall we?

This was the moment. Margot Robbie and her stylist Andrew Mukamal had already signaled that they were going to be delving into the Barbie archives to inspire the star’s red carpet looks with several pink-themed appearances, but when she stepped out on the Seoul pink carpet working a stunning recreation of Day to Night Barbie (down to the ’90s-sized cell phone), we all realized that she was taking this further than any of us had a right to expect. In other words, this was the moment when the Barbie promotional tour became delightful, and the result was that the whole world leaned forward to see what she was going to wear next. She never looked so much like a living Barbie, not even in the film. It’s more costume than fashion design, but it remains one of the savviest and most exciting red carpet tours in years and we have no doubt it had a hand in pushing the film past the billion-dollar box office mark.

Because it’s just not a T Lo list without a little weirdness in it. The Bitter Kittens weren’t in love with this look when it first appeared, but we were enthralled by it. A lot of stars embraced the Schiaparelli brand of weirdness over the last few years, but no star was so well-suited to it and leaned into as hard as her. This is gorgeously bizarre and vaguely unsettling in the best way challenging fashion can be. No one looked like this on a red carpet this year.

Michelle Yeoh in Karl Lagerfeld Couture at The Met Gala

Miss Yeoh had herself a banner career year, picking up an Oscar for her performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once. Not coincidentally, she also had a banner style year as she, for lack of a better term, “graduated” to A-lister status, with all of its privileges and promotions. In other words, she’s always been stylish, but her style took a decidedly couture-like turn this year. It’s typical for any prestige actress promoting a buzzy project, but she took her style in interesting and elegant directions. Of her many gorgeous looks this year, her Met Gala ensemble wound up being our favorite. It’s dramatic, elegant, and slightly offbeat in the way that suits her best.

[Editor’s note: In order to explain or justify this choice, we’re going to revert to our circa 2009 blogger selves, because sometimes you’ve just gotta rely on some good old-fashioned gay sass to get your point across]

THIS FIERCE BITCH IS WERQING THE FUCK OUT OF A TIGER GOWN WHAT THE HELL ELSE DO YOU WANT FROM HER?

Haha, just kidding. We don’t have an editor.

Because of the SAG-AFTRA strike, she never got the kind of promotional tour that was owed her as a highly-buzzed actress in a prestige period drama heading toward the Oscars. We were so looking forward to a good six months of style coverage for her, based solely on this appearance at Cannes. It’s the perfect “I’ve arrived and I’m not leaving” sort of declarative look that a rising actress should be deploying at this moment. It’s also uniquely interesting, different from normal red carpet fare, and perfectly suited to her. She looks fantastic.
