Cardi B in Gaurav Gupta Couture at the Grammys
Sculptural, dramatic, elegant and sexy; Cardi B’s gown at the 2023 Grammys was what we in the fashion commentary biz like to dub “a Moment.” The color is gorgeous, the fit is sublime, the earrings are perfectly chosen and the posing is on point. She cleared her plate on this one.
Halle Bailey in Valdrin Sahiti at the LA Premiere of The Little Mermaid
Red carpet theme dressing really hit its zenith this year with Margot Robbie’s Barbie promotional tour, but The Little Mermaid star Halle Bailey also managed to work in a few sea-related looks on her publicity jaunt, our favorite of which was this shimmering sea goddess gown. We love it for being evocative as opposed to literal. It reminds you of the film’s setting without looking like she stole a costume from the wardrobe department. And she looks gorgeous in it, of course.
Florence Pugh in Nina Ricci by Harris Reed at the BAFTAs
We remember a time when we were excited to feature anything Florence Pugh wore because her taste in fashion was legendarily awful. But Miss Flo has really come into her own in the last few years, and her public style has reflected that. She likes dramatic, exuberant gowns that celebrate her own body. We could have picked any of a number of free-the-nip moments she served up this year, but it was her brilliant orange ruffled creation at the BAFTAs that won us over the most. We love how her hair mimics the dress design. And speaking of hair making a look…
Danai Gurira in Jason Wu at the Oscars
This is a good example of why we don’t call this a “Best Dressed” list; because a good red carpet look is about so much more than fashion design. The gown is lovely and classic with an interesting detail at the bustline, but it really only comes alive as a look (and lands on this list) because of the masterful styling. That hair is magnificent – and it’s a perfect way to update the classic Audrey-inspired LBD look and make it something new.
