The MAESTRO Teaser Trailer Starring Carey Mulligan and Bradley Cooper

We posted some on-location shots of the Maestro production when it was shooting last summer and made our somewhat ambiguous feelings about the casting of Bradley Cooper as Leonard Bernstein known then. We were always going to watch this, just because it reeked of Oscar bait, but with the release of the teaser trailer (along with that admittedly pretty fabulous poster art above), we’re suddenly…

… a little less enthusiastic about it? We don’t know… of course it’s just a teaser trailer, which should be taken with a massive grain of salt in terms of a film’s potential quality or lack of it, but this just feels so pretentiously “prestige” in style and tone. Just the idea of rendering the 1940s in black and white feels like a Scorsese-ian cliche. Still, the final product could be markedly different than this peek implies, but if the whole point of a teaser is to give you a first impression, we’re afraid this one didn’t work for us. We’ll be back to eat crow if the official trailer is any better or it sweeps awards season.
