Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan, smelling like wig tape, prosthetics, and Oscar nominations, as they shoot Maestro in Central Park. Netflix released some publicity shots (below) over the weekend, with very few accompanying details about the project, except that it’s being produced by Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg and directed by Cooper, in which he also stars as legendary composer Leonard Bernstein, with Mulligan portraying his wife Felicia Montealegre. We figure they were timed because they knew these location shots were going to come out over the next few days.

We’re already picturing their Oscar campaign fashion.

When we heard that Cooper was portraying Bernstein, we thought that sounded like pretty solid casting. We weren’t sure how to feel about the Irish-Italian actor playing the Jewish composer, but looking at the prosthetic nose here, it suddenly feels a lot more questionable to us, even if he does look astonishingly like Bernstein. This is part of a much larger trend of actors burying themselves under prosthetics and fat suits in order to portray people who don’t look like 21st Century movie stars (Jared Leto in House of Gucci, Collin Farrell in The Batman, Renee Zellweger in The Thing About Pam). It should also be noted that Mulligan is playing a Chilean-American woman so the ethnic casting here is questionable across the board.

Having said that, they both look pretty great in the parts and the costuming – especially on her – is perfect for establishing time, place and character. For younger and older versions of the characters, check out the promo shots Netflix released this weekend:
