The Princess of Wales attended the first Trooping the Colour in her new title – but then again, so did practically everyone else in the family. But we’re afraid we’re going to have to incur the wrath of the Cathy fans, because we really don’t like what she chose to wear for the occasion. And we’re embarrassed about what we’re going to say next.
For once, we are forced to admit that she actually is wearing something that looks like a classic Princess Diana ensemble. We have long railed against the idea that royals dress in tribute to their dead; a romantic notion fueled by a royal-watching press looking for narratives. And to be clear, we don’t actually think she’s paying homage to the former title-bearer. As we’ve noted plenty of times before, Euro Royal style – especially among the BRF – is not a particularly broad playing field, so to speak. The looks are streamlined, classic, usually colorful and British-prim to the core. Plus there are hats. Lots and lots of hats. There is bound to be repetition among the ladies in the family and we have no doubt that if you looked hard enough, you could find a similar ensemble in the style history of anyone from Princess Margaret to Fergie to Princess Michael of Kent. So yes, we do get a strong whiff of Spencer from this ensemble, but we don’t necessarily consider it a deliberate homage.
It’s an unusually strong look for a Princess who tends to keep things as bland as possible in her style, which is why we almost feel bad for disliking it. The quality and detailing of the dress is exquisite, but we think that green is a little harsh. But what we really hate are the buttons, which are too large and gaudy for the garment. We might have been convinced if they weren’t placed over the faux pockets, but we still wouldn’t love them. Worse, she had one placed on the back of the hat, which is so overly matchy that we honestly find it a little tacky. The shamrock brooch is charming and has great meaning of course, but it looks terrible here. This just isn’t the kind of dress you can add jewelry to. We don’t even like her signature Diana-owned earrings with it.
