The legend Madonna hit the Jimmy Fallon set because she’s got a lot going on at the moment, what with her appearances on some highly buzzy Beyoncé and Saucy Santana remixes, the work on her self-directed biopic starring Julia Garner, and the release of her greatest hits collection Finally Enough Love: 50 Number Ones. She apparently found the time in all that to get new grills and put together this little number:
She completely loses us with the pants. Not because we don’t like them but because we think they don’t go with the corset at all. We like everything from the waist up, but then again, it’s pretty close to classic Madonna in a lot of ways. Here’s the thing about her much-derided senior style: putting aside the eternal quest to remain as free of normal facial age markers as possible; a quest that makes her no different from generations of her celebrity female peers, from Jane Fonda to Nicole Kidman, we only ever truly had an issue with how Madge dressed when it felt like she was trying to recapture something from her past. Whatever else you can say about her or this ensemble, it doesn’t feel like a retread of her youth, even if it does have certain Madonna style motifs, like the lace and the corset and the stacked necklaces. It feels like her. We never expected her to hit her senior citizen years in tasteful gowns and demure sweater sets. Cher didn’t and we all love her for that. This isn’t a great look, but it’s definitely a Madonna look.
