We got all excited yesterday because we spotted a nascent red carpet trend unfolding (black skirts are IN at the moment), but looking at Hailee’s Marvel debutante ball ensemble here, we realize we’ve let a much bigger trend go by largely without comment from us. Of all the things we might have predicted about style trends after 18 months of lockdown and culture coming more or less to a halt, we never, EVER could have predicted…

…that so many ladies would be dying to bare their bellies. Examples? Why certainly, darling. Click to your heart’s delight. It’s funny, because so many style prognosticators claimed that bras would be ditched and everyone would be in caftans and loungewear for a good while, but once the doors got thrown open and stars felt comfortable enough to take their masks off, the exact opposite happened. We had our doubts that we’d be entering a seventies-style era of letting it all hang out. For one, the fashion industry today is WAY more savvy about riding out anti-fashion trends than it was half a century ago. For another, we thought people were looking at it wrong. It wasn’t going to be a return to casual street styles and loungewear post-pandemic. It was always going to be a return to glitz and glamour in the 1920s mode. We didn’t see the body-baring stuff coming back this hard, but it makes a certain amount of sense. You’ve gotta figure that the lockdown period hit one group of people the hardest in one specific area. Sex and the under-35 crowd; i.e., the largest generational cohort of single, sexually active people and not coincidentally, the group that sets fashion trends in motion. The Millenials and Z’s are horny, y’all. And the female stars in that age group are adopting a more body-con, mega-glam style. We also think this partially explains the rise in peacocking among male stars.

Anyway, these two queens are getting tired of looking at bandeau tops. This is fine, but as a look, it’s already feeling a bit stale. Now if we could just convince more male stars with great abs to wear crop tops…
