Hi, we hate this.

After a whirlwind romance in Monte Carlo with handsome widower Maxim de Winter (Armie Hammer), a newly married young woman (Lily James) arrives at Manderley, her new husband’s imposing family estate on a windswept English coast. Naive and inexperienced, she begins to settle into the trappings of her new life, but finds herself battling the shadow of Maxim’s first wife, the elegant and urbane Rebecca, whose haunting legacy is kept alive by Manderley’s sinister housekeeper Mrs. Danvers (Kristin Scott Thomas). Directed by Ben Wheatley (High Rise, Free Fire) and produced by Working Title Films (Emma, Darkest Hour), REBECCA is a mesmerising and gorgeously rendered psychological thriller based on Daphne du Maurier’s beloved 1938 gothic novel.

Film Release Date: October 21, 2020.

Directed By: Ben Wheatley.
Screenplay By: Jane Goldman and Joe Shrapnel & Anna Waterhouse.
Based on the Novel By: Daphne du Maurier.
Produced By: Eric Fellner, Tim Bevan, Nira Park.

Cast: Lily James, Armie Hammer, Kristin Scott Thomas, Keeley Hawes, Ann Dowd, Sam Riley, Tom Goodman-Hill, Mark Lewis Jones, John Hollingworth, and Bill Paterson.

We’re not such purists that we ‘d claim du Maurier’s novel should never be interpreted again after Hitchcock’s classic version, starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine. It’s been reinterpreted several times over the last 3/4-century so we’re not upset someone else decided to give it a go. We’re not even upset about 2/3 of the casting. Lily James seems like a fine choice, since she’s an actress who can appear both plainly appealing and downright stunning on film. And Kristin Scott Thomas certainly has the intensity to play Mrs. Danvers.

But this looks so …

Bleh. So “TV generic.” The lighting is flat, the costumes are bland, and Armie Hammer makes an absolutely terrible Maxim de Winter. Plus, Kristin Scott Thomas looks far too chic to be the dowdy/severe Mrs. Danvers and WHAT is going on with that Hillary Clinton hair Lily’s sporting? It’s virtually impossible to tell what year this is supposed to be but it sure doesn’t look like the ’30s or the ’40s to us.
