Oscars 2019 Countdown: Yalitza-Aparicio-ology

Continuing our pre-Oscars red carpet tealeaf-reading tradition, we’re shifting our focus away from Glenn Close and onto the freshest newcomer of the year, who absolutely took this moment of spotlight attention and ran with it, snagging every chic, elegant and/or eye-popping dress she could snag while the snagging was good. Miss Yalitza? We salute you.

Having said that, there’s no real way to suss out a through-line or set of motifs in her style choices. She and her team have done very well, displaying impeccable taste more often than not.

But the range of styles vary widely. If there’s any consistency, it’s in the vague sense that she’s working a retro form of formalness.

But she’s not even consistent with that. This isn’t a criticism – especially since her choices are mostly good, no matter what styles she chooses to wear.

There’s a slight preference for pinks and purples now and then, but the way they’re rendered varies widely. There’s a sense of elegance in most of her looks; a sense that she has no desire to get too flashy or too sexed-up.

Which doesn’t mean she’s opposed to the idea of making an impression, as most of her style choices tend to do. That’s the thing about her style in total: there’s a quiet sort of demand for attention. You notice her and you notice how well she’s dressed.

It’s also very traditionally feminine in tone – heels and skirts all the way down the line. Like we said, a vaguely sort of retro elegance.

But given her range, she’s also capable of a bold sort of modernity and loudness in her style. What can we say? The girl’s tough to nail down, but that’s because she’s got the serious fashion chops. If she was varying widely in her choices and making a lot of mistakes, we’d say she was a rookie overwhelmed by her choices. But almost every look is well-styled, well-fitted and well-suited to her.

Almost.

Almost.

She’s nearing the end of the road and her choices are naturally starting to get less notable.

Retro, feminine, elegant, pink.

If we had to predict, we’d say those are her most likely elements or undertones. But given how much she likes to travel the fashion map, we figure all bets are off for the main event. No matter what it is, we bet it’ll be gorgeous and we bet her makeup will be flawless.
