Let’s take a break from all the high-falutin’ formalwear of Oscars night and cast our minds back to a simpler time; a time lost to the fog of memory. A time known as last Saturday night, at what has more or less become the pre-party to the Oscars, the Film Independent Spirit Awards. We sprinted through a few spotlight posts on certain attendees on Sunday as a warmup to our Oscars coverage, but the rest of these folks have been waiting patiently to hear what we all think of their dresses. Let’s help them out.
Amanda Seyfried in Givenchy Couture
This is rather smartly chic. This event used to be much more low-key, but it’s gotten progressively dressier over the years. This is a high-fashion solution to the problem of straddling that line.
Armie Hammer in Etro
It’s a little too snug on him, but it’s such an improvement over his usual low-effort looks.
Aubrey Plaza in Miu Miu
The dress is pretty plain, but the shoes are adorable. They don’t quite work with such a low hem, though. Bring that thing up a few or down a few.
Carey Mulligan in Chanel
Yuck. Sorry, girl. Your frock is hideous.
Chloë Moretz in Loewe
We burst out laughing because it’s just so her in that extra sort of way. Still, the dress is kind of fun. We think she should’ve worn boots with it.
Dakota Johnson in Gucci
So is everyone just gonna start wearing wrist scrunchies now? This is cute, but the bottom half is really tough to pull off.
Finn Wolfhard in Darkoh
Practically an indie film event dude uniform.
John Cho in Ermenegildo Zegna
Cute. Yes, it’s a sweat-SUIT. It works for the venue and he looks great in it.
Jon Hamm
Also very cute and hard to argue with.
Laura Dern in Azzedine Alaïa
We’d find that dress generic on a lot of folks, but it works really well with her looks and height.
Marisa Tomei in Co
We mentioned that the fashion can get a little funky sometimes, right?
We’re not opposed to the idea here, but the t-shirt really doesn’t go well with the suit.
Regina King in Valentino
The first look she’s worn that we really don’t look. The color’s great and we have no problem with a loose fit, but this looks 3 sizes too large on her.
Riley Keough in Louis Vuitton
Oh, girl. You got LV’d HARD. Michelle Williams is quietly laughing behind her hand right now.
Tilda Swinton in Haider Ackermann
No problems here. Effortless.
Toni Collette in Alex Perry
It’s a great dress, but once Lupita’s worn it, all others are advised to proceed with caution. Also, those shoes are horrifying.
Yalitza Aparicio in Miu Miu
It’s a lovely and low-key look but the contouring on her chest is WAY overdone.
Zoe Kazan in Dior
What? NO! Stop this! We denounce it!
