WERQ: Anne Hathaway at Paris Fashion Week

Posted on July 08, 2011

Sometimes you see someone and even though they’re not wearing anything particularly gasp-worthy, they just look so right for the time and place. Even better, they look like they know it. That’s a WERQ moment.

Anne Hathaway attends the Valentino Haute Couture show in Paris.

Like we said, not an earth-shattering look by any means, but she looks so chic, so “Oh, I just threw this together when I woke up in my Paris hotel room this morning,” that when you pair it with that grin and those shades, it’s a head-turner. This WERQ is almost entirely about attitude and Annie’s clearly loving the way she looks at the moment.

Really? It’s a gigantic fail for me.

      • Anonymous

I agree. Nothing about it makes me turn my head for this get up.

    • Anonymous

      The attitude is everything here.

    • http://profiles.google.com/paigemano Paige Mano

Yeah, from the sheer hose to the awful sheer-dress-over-teddy thing (when will that be over, BTW) to the limp hair, it’s a fail for me too.  She does have a killer smile, though.

    • http://pleasewelcomeyourjudges.com/ Brian @ PWYJudges

I know this goes against your “it all depends on the wearer, there are no hard and fast rules” mantra… but I’m sensing a shift at TLo Megacom Industries LLC with regards to lace/sheer fabric. Seems these days you are applauding it a lot more often.

As for Anne… she bettah WERQ!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_64HSRZWCSJ5RBFGCWDLFQOICYM G

Not crazy about it, but the attitude is there.  Reminds me of all those fabulous gowns she wore at the Oscars… is there anyone luckier?

    • aussiegal77

I can’t get behind the granny undies silhouette.  She does have a great smile though but today it’s a little on the smug side.  This isn’t working for me, sorry.

    • Anonymous

It’s all about the smiles and sunglasses. I didn’t even look at the dress.

    • Anonymous

I didn’t gasp or swoon but she does look perfectly at home in Paris at the Valentino COuture show.  That is an amazing smile and air of confidence she posesses.  The dress isn’t my favorite and I think her hair could be a little less…lank?

All in all, I love her, she is gorgeous!  And DAMN!  Can she wear clothes or what?

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MNMVM2GPVUEIOJXBOSLCXKAW4U judy brown

I’m counting the days until granny panties and sheer skirts are gone, gone, gone.

    • Anonymous

It’s a bit too baggy for me.

    • bookish

If we were just basing this WERQ on the last photo I would be all over this, but I am so tired of sheer skirts I could scream. And I feel completely ridiculous for feeling that way about anything having to do with celebrity fashion.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=583342965 Melody Sellers

She looks happy but that dress definitely does not.

      • http://profiles.google.com/mmara00 M M

Right, that’s just what doesn’t “WERQ” for me. She’s sunny, the weather is sunny, but her dress is dark and a little goth. It all just clashes.

    • Anonymous

I’ve always tried to HIDE my granny panties. Ready for this trend to stop forever. But Anne is lovely, especially when she smiles, so she gets a pass.

    • Anonymous

She looks great, the look…not so much.

    • Mariah J

The attitude makes it. Otherwise its a little too much see through ick.

    • http://twitter.com/HeckYeahHeckNo K

I don’t know you guys. I don’t mind the dress, but I think Anne looks a bit frumpy. I think she should have worn her hair in a cute pony tail or something, and I dunno about those sunglasses. The dress is also too baggy on her IMHO. I just don’t think she’s doing anything right here :(

    • http://twitter.com/jennawaterford Jenna Waterford

I do not love the dress but agree she’s rocking the hell out of it. Her hair and those shades and her makeup, and that smile! Rock. On.

And I just love her. She seems like she’d be really cool to know.

    • Dana Silverberg

This is my first time posting, after 2 years of reading this amazing site- wonder why I’ve never stated my opinion before! I love Anne but I actually saw this photo yesterday and out loud at work said “TLo is going to rip this one” alas I was wrong. If this was in any other color it wouldn’t work at all right? Black is the only color I could picture this in- but I’m still not a fan.

Are those thigh high hose with garters?

    • Anonymous

She looks great. Only quibble is she looks a little like she’s got a creepy crawly is scampering down her cleavage.

      • Anonymous

Or, a bizarre patch of thick chest hair.  What terrible placement for an insignia on sheer.  Blech.

      • MilaXX

UGH! Now that I see it, it’s all I see.

      • Anonymous

Yeah, it’s bugging me too. Not good.

    • http://twitter.com/democracydiva Democracy Diva

BIG fail for me as well. We usually don’t disagree quite so vehemently, TLo, but this is shapeless and sad. And aren’t you supposed to be the gays leading the fight against sheer skirts and diapers? CHARGE!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=167100010 Meghan Young

Ugh. No. Granny panties. Sheer long layer. HORRID hair. I don’t care how awesome she thinks she looks; she’s wrong.

    • http://joansbooks.blogspot.com/ lilithcat

The shades are ridiculously large for her face and there are those awful granny panties again!  Make them stop, please!

    • http://twitter.com/kmc1138 Kathleen Coyle

I love it.  Reminds of stuff that was around back when Todd Oldham and Anna Sui were king and queen.

    • Anonymous

We all just finished hating on the Granny panties in an earlier designer collection posting. I’m not loving these any more just because a pretty, stylish actress is wearing them. Ugh.

      • Anonymous

Not all. Quite a few of us love that collection.

        • Anonymous

sorry, should have said “a surprising majority”

    • Anonymous

      Blah.

    • MilaXX

I like this from the waist up and I think that is largely due to Annie’s beautiful smile and the killer sunglasses she is wearing. The rest of the outfit is a “meh” for me. I think she’s too pale for the sheer skirt. If this was an IN or OUT post, this would be an OUT for me.

    • http://twitter.com/sockandaphone Gaby

but the shoes and the sheer hose D:

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=6416893 Jenna Kuhmann

If Jen Aniston would have had this killer confidence while wearing her baby-doll dress, it would have changed everything.

I don’t like the dress, but i LOVE. HUH.  She clearly feels awesome and isn’t that what it’s all about?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1303837450 Lauren Dorsee Dillon

Sheer skirt and limp hair are a no. Great smile and attitude are a yes. Confidence trumps bad hair day. IN but not WERQ.

    • Anonymous

From the waist up, she looks trés mam’selle, so I agree. But has this ever happened to you? There’s a fashion trend you really don’t like, but it’s everywhere, and after awhile, not only do you grow used to it, but it starts to seem very normal, and before you know what hit you, you start to like it. Or think you like it. Or not mind it. For example, sheer long skirt over granny pants or short under-skirt……. TLo?

    • Anonymous

You’re right about one thing – it looks like she threw it together.  It’s a steaming pile.

    • Nicole Chubb

You guys are quickly warming up to granny panties and sheer skirts after a long, hateful relationship. I’m a little scared.

    • Nicole Chubb

Ok, I take it back. I see what you’re saying in the first pic. All I see is her and smile :) You guys always make me do a double take. But I still am not crazy about that dress.

    • Anonymous

WERQ?  No.  Sorry.  Already a fashion cliche, and not a very good one.  I can’t tell if she’s working the look or not.  She’s smiling, but she always does that.  The outfit overwhelms her though.  She’s all skirt and hair.

    • http://twitter.com/mollynoodles Molly Harrington

A lot of people have hated this look, but I love it. It is, all about the attitude. She looks great in it, and she looks like she FEELS great it in. That’s really what makes an outfit. Hate the hair though.

    • http://profiles.google.com/trashilove { edi } ilovetrash

if she made it a slip –even a mini slip– instead of a shaper, i would be right w/ you on this one. i just cannot do the underwear thing any more. it didnt need to live past siouxsie sioux & jordan circa 1976 & even then it got stale  F A S T.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1046681022 Paula Berman

I’m surprised this is a WERQ, as I hate every aspect of it but the girl who’s wearing it: Risky Business shades, bedhead, fugly sheer spotted outer dress that looks like curtains from a funeral home, with granny panties underneath over sheer hose, rounded out in its hideousness with black patent secretary pumps.  It’s a big, huge, festering fail to me.

    • Anonymous

Wow, I’m just so overdosed on the sheer-over-granny-panties look that if I never see it again it would be too soon.

    • Anonymous

If it weren’t for the attitude, smile and shades this would be a “meh” for me. The dress doesn’t seem to be the star here. SHE is. Which is good, cuz I’m not a fan of the dress.

    • Anonymous

      Stockings?  Really?  Is it July?

    • Anonymous

Um, no, not a WERQ for me, boys.  The sheer over granny panties is absurd and the black is harsh.  The length of the skirt is too long and whatever that lace thing is in the middle of her chest, it’s got to go – looks like a sea urchin growing in there.  The only thing that WERQs are the shades and the lipstick.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=637520850 Madison Chua

She’s more Harlequin than Catwoman. The dress is ill fitting, it being a tad too big. Not chic at all. And boring as hell.

    • bookish

I feel like this trend is a giant example of “the emperor has no clothes.” People are oohing and awing and wearing this stuff, while the designers are off somewhere laughing about the fact that they’re getting all these beautiful women to show us their panties in public.

    • http://profiles.google.com/trashilove { edi } ilovetrash

i wanted to add that these last couple years are the first in perhaps decades where the looks are gonna date out really fast. i mean, i think this looks foolish already, & heaven help us all who care at all about fashion what the world’s gonna look like when this look o’ lack o’ coverage hits the stores of the very downmarketest proletariat–

–regardless, in six months the whole fancy for seriously visible panty lines is gonna laughable. not that it isnt laughable now. but it’s gonna quick-hit passé –& thats something that hasnt happened in fashion for a while. i mean, people are still wearing hiphuggers & leggings of all dreadful stripe, but look at my underpants cant be modified even as much as can those two faux-fashions.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Catherine-Rhodes/602850414 Catherine Rhodes

I think she looks fabulous. Love the dress, it suits and flatters her.

    • Anonymous

It’s all about the attitude here because the only thing that’s worth commenting on IS the attitude. The outfit? Not so much.

    • Anonymous

I have looked at these pictures again to see if I can see what you boys are liking here.  I do not see it.  She looks ridiculous, and I think the smile may be a reflection not of attitude but of embarrassment.  Every aspect of this is bad.

    • Anonymous

Yeah, if you’re gonna crawl out of your $5000/night bed and throw on the Valentino couture granny panties, you could probably also wash your hair……

    • Anonymous

Yuck. This is way too baggy and sloppy.

    • Anonymous

Put down the crack pipe boys.  She might be loving how she looks, but that doesn’t mean she looks good.

    • Anonymous

If I was in Paris for the couture shows and was super slim and pretty I would totally wear this dress. But DESPISE those sunglasses on her. They make her nose look hugely out of proportion on her face, they are too wide and just generally too big for her face. The sunglasses are awful. Otherwise, pefect for the moment. And she has such a fabulous smile.

    • http://twitter.com/unflattering unflattering

Would I be a cunt for saying it looks like she’s wearing Courtney Love’s castoffs circa 1995?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shaylea-Mckay/55002756 Shaylea Mckay

Oh, I love this dress!  I want it!

    • Anonymous

Love the sunglasses and hair, the rest not so much. Maybe the smile is related to waking up in her Paris hotel after An Ohh La la kind of night.

    • Courtney Hellams

      she looks like an olsen

What’s going on in T-Lo land? Lots of praise of late for the least praise-worthy things!

      UGH…HATE the black hose.  blech

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Micaela-Cannon/1465504041 Micaela Cannon

She really does look like a rich bitch on her way to a fashion show. I kind of hate the outfit, but I can’t help but LOVE these pictures.

    • Delaney Davis

Love it! Perfect occasion for the dress. Maybe that’s why I’m not loving the sheer skirts on the red carpet. I want to go where she’s going :)

    • Anonymous

OK.. I just noticed.. she has on a garter belt to hold up those awful black stockings. I was so glad to see those go out in the 70’s, please do not bring them back outside of the bedroom. Overall, yuck.

    • Anonymous

I’m disappointed because AH has usually been pretty classy, not slutty.  The granny panties are bad enough but the garters/hose…oh.My!…cheap call girl.  I don’t care how hard she’s trying to WERQ is, it isn’t working.

    • Anonymous

Granny panties under a sheer skirt will NEVER be okay and I am not going to budge on that EVER.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

The outfit may not work, but she is fully WERQing it.  Her smile just radiates joy.

    • Anonymous

Oh my! You’ve pushed all their buttons with this one LOL! Sheer, lace, black, hosiery, visible underwear and flesh EEK! The churches will be full on Sunday.

Other than I’m not too sure on the shoes (something a bit edgier than a fairly plain court), and that she seems to have picked up someone elses bag, I think she looks fine. Confident in herself and enjoying it. I don’t love the outfit but I don’t have a problem with it. But then I don’t mind sheer skirts at all.

    • Lisa

She looks polished and put together, and I LOVE those shades!  But I just hate the dress – I hate this trend of the shorter dress under the long sheer skirt, and I cringe whenever I see it.

By the way, TLo, any word on what sunglasses those are? I need a new pair, and that’s the size and shape I’ve been shopping for!

    • Anonymous

Once again, I completely agree with TLo on this. I would be surprised at the comments, but I kind of assumed that no one would like this because of all of the Givenchy collection….nonsense. And I’m extremely happy that TLo seem to be warming up to lace/sheer clothing, because it’s something I’ve always loved. And I love this too. Really, really beautiful. I didn’t gasp or anything. But there isn’t a thing I’d change. You fuckin’ WERQ it, Annie!

ThaliaMeninger: “Granny panties under a sheer skirt will NEVER be okay and I am not going to budge on that EVER.”What she said. Looking so happy doesn’t make her look less ridiculous.

    • Anonymous

Yeah, I hate it. She looks droopy.

    • Anonymous

Though no fan of teeny pants w/ sheer skirts, I’d have shrugged at this if she’d just committed to the look.

When she chose those shoes and that purse, a near-WERQ collapsed into “rummaging in the dress-up box.”

The clothes are not so nice but she looks great anyway. Hmm.

Uh, so everyone was aghast when Gretchen sent granny panties down the runway on PR, and outraged that the Duchess and Madame Defarge pronounced them “on trend”.  AND here they are on the red carpet (and, apparently, based on the posts — I’m not a regular follower — have been for some time).  I’m not sayin I like them or Gretchen and her work, I’m just sayin….

    • Jill Roberts

Is it just possible that someone can look amazing in a style that you don’t particularly care for, minions?  Consider…

    • http://twitter.com/SongBird3411 Mindy

Nope.  Still voting NO for sheer skirts over granny panties, or whatever kind of lingerie this is.  No, no, no.  Designers, you will never convince me this is anything but vulgar.  No matter how many happy Anne Hathaways you trot out wearing it.

    • Anonymous

That’s a ridiculous look for the middle of summer. All black plus pantyhose?

I don’t get all the fawning she receives here. And she always wears the most unflattering makeup.

    • Anonymous

She is fabulous, the dress is not. She redeems the dress from the  waist up, elevating it from the late-middle-age Italian American matron vibe it gives me. She can’t save the skirt which just looks awkward. Like a see-through hippie skirt over a chic black beach cover up.

    • Anonymous

I don’t go anywhere near “hate,” but droopy is the mot juste for what’s wrong here. For me it’s not the visible underpinnings or even the sheer, per se.  It’s because it looks droopy and more random than inspired.

    • Anonymous

I think it just looks a mess.

    • Anonymous

in the first picture i thought she had saggy boob syndrome, but in the closeup i can see  it’s just a lace embellishment and not cleavage.  i love the red in her hair but it is rather dull and lanky.  truly love the purse and i can see how much she’s loving the swishy skirt.  you go girl!

The shoes is all wrong. And the embroidery on her chest makes her looks like she has hair on them. I do like the sheer dress however, just NO to that chest embroidery. I like that her purse is not matchy matchy but I think its the wrong purse for it. And she needs a watch or a bracelet of some sort. LOVE the sunnies

She looks like an outtake fro Devil Wears Prada.
