In or Out: Cate Blanchett in Armani Privé

Posted on July 06, 2011

Okay, we’ve all had our fun at Ke$ha’s expense; now the real work starts. As dedicated minions may know, Empress Cate of Ferocity has let us all down in recent days; opting to forego her normal fierce and fabulous looks in order to show up on red carpets looking like a dowdy real estate agent or loopy art school teacher.  The world recoiled in horror; the moon fell out of the sky; cats and dogs cohabitated. The End Times were upon us.

Until….

Cate Blanchett attends the Armani Privé Haute Couture Fall 2011 show in Paris.

Armani Privé Spring 2011 Couture Collection/Model: Alana Zimmer (ELITE)

YES! SHE’S BACK! THANK YOU, MR. JESUS!

Only…

Well, it’s all a bit monochromatic, yes? It’s a fantastic suit, and we’re grateful she skipped that second tier on the skirt (as well as the satin leggings), but did she have to go with red shoes, a red purse, and orangey-red earrings? That will never not look totally Barbie to us. To our way of thinking, if you’re going to strip the outfit of its more out-there elements, then you need to style what remains correctly, otherwise it’s going to look a little severe. Something a little more interesting in the jewelry and shoe departments would have made us happier. As it is, we’re mostly relieved that she seems to be getting her mojo back.

VOTE NOW!

IN! She’s streamlined and fierce, bitches!

OUT! Lawyer Barbie!

The Minion Opinion on Ke$ha’s unique brand of attention-seeking was a near-unanimous OUT.

In.  Agreed that the all red is a little much, but Cate eats “a little much” for breakfast with strawberries on top.

I’d call this Real Estate Agent Barbie. That hem length is doing her no favors and nothing about this is flattering. The only part I like is the earrings. OUT.

Out. But better than the most recent offerings.

I liked this outfit till you said this. Now I keep thinking, “Yep, we’re totally going to see this on Evelyn Harper next season.” Damn.

Completely agree. There are elements I like and I think the earrings are wonderful. But the length of the skirt doesn’t work and that weird hem on the jacket bothers me to no end. Love Cate but … OUT.

Well well well,…. Hmmm. I think the hemline of the skirt is a tad bit too long, hitting her leg at an unflattering place. And though i love the sleeve, I think the same is true there.  The whole thing makes her look oddly proportioned.  Or is it really just the camera angle?  I can’t be sure.  As for the matchy issue.  Not a problem for me.  I sometimes love the sleekness of a monochromatic look.

    • Anonymous

I agree about the proportions. The hem of the top has a strange, unfinished look to it. The skirt should end above the knees, as it does on the model. Cate sure looks great in red, though.

I don’t get the criticisms against a matchy/monochromatic theme. It may be”safe”, but having colors that compliment each other is far better than using colors that clash. TLo may not like Barbie accessorizing, but that’s how ladies did it during the very stylish 1920s, 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s. Fashion is still referencing those time periods.

    • Anonymous

Because it’s Cate, she’s still an IN.

  • Anonymous

I don’t like the shoes and cluch, i hate those earrings and i think the hem of the skirt is too long. Love the colour and the lines of the jacket…
IN but only because it’s Cate.

  • Anonymous

I think she looks beautiful, except the skirt ends at an unflattering length.  Looks a tad matronly in the first pic. IN.

  • Lies L.

In, she’s fabulous as ever, even if I agree about the red. I actually didn’t hate her previous look (the art teacher one) either.

  • Anonymous

I’m going to say ‘in’ – though what bugs me the most is the length of the skirt! Hike it up a notch and then we’re all good. And I actually dig the earrings – I’d say they’re just *not matchy* enough to make it interesting.

  • Frank Quotes

Out. Not because of the monochromaticness of it – it just looks so unflattering. It hits her legs in the most unflattering place possible, making her look dumpy and short. Look how much more flattering the above the knee length on the model is. And the arced cut of the jacket kind of makes her look pregnant, especially when the shiny understuff and the second tier are removed.

    • http://twitter.com/crush_onyou crush on you

I agree that the skirt is too long, and she should have kept the second tier on the skirt, with all the shiny details (not the leggings tho). I like red paired with similar colors so the earrings are a go in my book; I’d have preferred she played with that a little more as in orange bad-girl shoes, maybe. Still not sure if I like it or not, I feel tempted to say ‘in’ but that’s because I love her so much, not because of this look working.

Love. The earrings are so fierce too.

IN/OUT…. I can’t be decisive this morning.  I actually loved the outfit with the second tier AND the leggings, a much edgier look.  And is it just my eyes or is the hem on jacket on Cate a little wonky to her right side?  Armani Prive, you expect PERFECTION execution.

    • Anonymous

That’s the first thing I noticed, too — that jacket hem is definitely a bit wavy on the right side.  Shame on Armani Privé, if they shortened it for her they should have at least done a decent job — I could do better myself!

I give her a qualified IN.  The skirt is a bit too long, but this is SUCH an improvement over the last couple of outfits!

Those satin leggings had to go, but I like the weird third tier.  I think that if anyone else wore this, she’d be an in, but Cate has set mighty high standards, and as said before, the skirt length is matronly.  She’s gotten it right so many times before, and in some pretty challenging fashion, that it sort of makes sense that she’d make some noteworthy misses.  If you don’t try, you won’t make mistakes:  in Cate’s case, she more often than not falls on the side of spectacular, whether she hits or misses the mark.  So OUT, darling:  you’ve earned it.

Out. It’s nice to see a good dress, but I find the length (altered from the runway look, I see) cuts her off at a bad place and makes her legs look huge. I agree on the matchy matchy shoes and accessories being a bad idea, too. I worship her and would gladly bow down and kiss the red carpet she walks on, so this makes me a sad as well as bitter kitten.

IN — but barely, it’s really THISCLOSE to being a Hillary suit, what with the bright color and unflattering way it hits the hip and leg.

  • Anonymous

This skirt length is unflattering to everyone who wears it.  Otherwise she looks great.  I love the orange earrings with all that red.

  • Anonymous

Hmmm…without the 2nd tier and the satiny underpanel in the runway look, this gives the impression that the shirt doesn’t fit.  And I don’t like where the hem hits.  It’s too unflattering.  I think I have to go with OUT.  Damn it.  Forgive me, Cate!

  • Anonymous

I am not grateful that she skipped the second tier on the skirt. This is Cate Blanchett, who wore a fucking picture frame around her tits for the Oscars. She could have made the second tier work. She should have at least given it a fighting try. OUT! For taking the safe route.

I mean, In because there’s nothing horrible about it.  But I’m still disappointed.  It’s still dowdy and I never thought I’d say that about Armani Prive.

  • Anonymous

She shouldda kept the second tier to jazz up the skirt, but it’s still an IN. Love the orange earrings.

  • Anonymous

The length of this skirt has caused a searing pain to my eyes! It is most unflattering as are the matchy-matchy shoes and purse. It hurts me to say this, but Cate get’s a semi-reluctant OUT for this look.

  • Anonymous

Heh. “Lawyer Barbie.” But not exactly, so In.

  • Anonymous

Sorry guys…I don’t think she’s back.  I think she took a couple of steps backwards.  Taking the extra tier out and lengthening the skirt suddenly made the suit matronly imo, and the hair reinforces that…ages Cate.  Match matchy = no no!

The suit on the model is fun and I think Cate has the style/youth/ability to pull off that look (minus the leggings of course.)  I do like that she paired orange earrings with this suit color though…nice accent.

    OUT

IN. With reservations, but still in.

  • Anonymous

It’s…nice. I don’t find anything really fierce about it. The skirt length is a bit dowdy and the only real interest in the jacket is the curved hem. It looks like something Michael Kors’ bridge line would do. I expect more from Queen Cate. Out.

Oh, and am I alone in thinking she looks painfully thin?

    • Anonymous

thank you so much for saying it first.  the way my lovely laptop is working, the runway look was revealed first.  hmmm, interesting, and what a fierce red.  AND THEN…beautiful makeup, soft but strong enough to back up that red.  so glad she ditched the space helmet and the purple lipstick.  fascinating earrings.  are they amber ?  want a closer look.  AND THEN…
those collarbones, that neck, is she ill?  i can’t comment on body issues, but really, i’m concerned.  ahhh, that gorgeous color and the perfect detail of contrasting texture on the sleeve.  but wait, below the waist, everything goes away.  a plain boring skirt, and it goes on and on.  AND T..H…..OMG it’s hilary’s legs!  how can this be?  the color on the shoes is good, a bit darker  than the suit and the shininess reflecting the sleeve edge.  not much interest though,  maybe in back?  i totally missed the purse.  So, in total, makeup in, earrings in, color IN, texture and detailing in.  skirt a big OUT for removing the most interesting part of the dress and for making her look like the secretary of state, present and past (ms. albright) an additional  out.  the shoes are on the fence, and the purse was absent at the time of voting.  so it looks like IN has the majority, with a loud and strong minority contingent shouting its dismay.

    • Jenn B

OK I was wondering why nobody was mentioning this. Not in a body snarking way — in a — she doesn’t look at all healthy way. Yes Hollywood stars are thin, I get it. And she’s always been thin but not skeletal. She looks frail in this. And I agree that the hem on the jacket does not look like Armani Prive.

I really want to like this, but I don’t.  The length of the skirt and the sleeves being the same length at the waistline, it all makes her look dowdy.  OUT

I actually love the look on the runway and think it would have translated fantastically on her body considering she’s practically identical in proportion to the model.  Well, minus the leggings.  The hem?  NEEDS TO BE HIGHER.  Another area where it looks much better on the runway.

Considering the high criteria Cate’s set with previous runway looks, I’m giving this an OUT.  She’s got more finesse than this!

    PS: She has Condoleezza hair.

Hunh.  I thought she should have kept the second tier on the skirt to make the outfit more interesting.  It’s a bit boring, no?  Sorry, but I’m leaning towards OUT.

Out. Eh, I think it’s way too safe and boring (and matchy) for Cate.  I would’ve just assumed she would’ve kept that funky second tier on the skirt and kept that length.  It has potential, but she stripped the interest out of it.  I like the earrings though.  But where’s the bold style icon she used to be?  She’s slipping.

I hate to say this but I don’t love it. The length of the skirt is making her legs look stumpy and I’m not sure red shoes & purse were the way to go. Also the makeup looks bad. She needs some powder stat and the earrings clash with the makeup, making the shininess look that much worse. I know Cate tends to wear fairly neutral makeup, but brown tones would have worked better here.

I say in, even though the skirt is too long. Looks like they just removed to top tier without adjusting the remaining hem, which had to be long to accommodate that second tier. I wonder about Kate’s weight–her head looks so large here. Is she getting too thin?

The original look was kind of monochromatic to begin with, but Cate’s more streamlined look takes the essence of the outfit and gets rid of the elements that make it look stupid to me. Idk, it may be a bit Barbie, but idgaf. IN!!

I think she destroyed the dress by tinkering with its carefully constructed layers. It’s now a beautiful cocktail dress with some slammin’ details instead of drop-dead amazing killer couture. I agree about the red leggings. They are too hot looking for summer anyway. The shoes are just things for her feet and I don’t mind the orange earrings. Interesting choice. I do wish she’d eat more than once/week though.

Hm.  Well, it’s an improvement over her last few looks, no doubt.  She still seems to be flailing a bit.  The skirt could be a little shorter, I think — it’s hitting her leg in a less-than-totally-flattering place.  I actually like the orangey-red of the earrings with the red dress, but she definitely needs different shoes and bag to make it really sing.  All that said, this is a marginal IN for me.  It’s a step in the right direction, but I’m still worried.

Hmm…not that crazy about it. I’m gonna go with ‘out’. She looks all politician’s-wife-y. I think she shoulda kept the second tier on the skirt. Woulda been a much more fierce look. I don’t know if good styling would really do all that much here…

The dress was so interesting with the shiny bits showing under the skirt overlay.  Taking the tier away and having the skirt length just below the knee adds up to ‘elegant lady goes to high tea.’   Rather disappointing.  That collection was so fun to look at and I’ve been hoping to see more of the pieces out and about on people getting their pictures taken.  Still, the red is fantastic on her…

OUT!  Are you folks viewing the same pics as me?  The hem is too long, making her calves look wide.  The missing tier on the skirt is a mistake, because now her hips look wider than they are.  Because of the cut of the top, the angle of the pic accentuates the baby weight she hasn’t lost yet.  NO OFFENSE to not having lost baby weight – just why would you wear something which brings ATTENTION to it?  The cut of the sleeve makes her look like someone photoshopped some arm extensions into the pic.  The whole thing kinda looks like a bad Star Trek uniform – Just add a pin and she’s set!

I mean, I love the earrings with the suit. The contrast with the color and then the bling picking up the shine of the satin.

      • Anonymous

I’m with you! The orange earrings paired with that shade of red just does it for me.

  • Anonymous

In.  I like the earrings, but the accessories could be a little more varied otherwise.

  • Anonymous

Love the dress, love the satin, love the earrings.  bag and shoes could be changed…to what?  Not sure.  Very IN.

  • Anonymous

I’m so sorry, Cate…you’re still not back. OUT.

  • Anonymous

Killer suit. I hope she has a good day at the office.

  • Anonymous

    OUT.  Too severe and unflattering.

  • Alyson Lamble

Qualified In, because the red looks great on her; however, major demerit points for bad accessorizing and even worse makeup.

  • Anonymous

I liked the runway version. Love the colour. Cate’s modifications take it into mother–of-the-bride territory. And the matchy-match accessories are unforgivable.
    OUT.

  • Anonymous

    In?
I really like the cray-cray of the leggings, and the second tier on the skirt adds just that something extra. But much better than recently.
Didn’t she just have another baby? She is looking rather worn and tired. Not projecting her usual “I know, I know, but really, I find it amusing” air.

  • http://twitter.com/vesperbeauty Vesper Beauty

I like it, but the tiered skirt looks more interesting. Wonder why she skipped it.

I would’ve liked the second tier, but all in all, she looks great. IN.

  • Rashida Jones

In. She looks fierce. Also the earrings are to die for.

  • Anonymous

As much as I appreciate the improvement, this is a little monochromatic for me. Additionally, the place where the two tiers split is not entirely flattering. OUT.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=49702581 Susan Bullard Mayer

I wish she’d have left the skirt as it.  Looks like an edgy creation by Kasper.

    Sorry, Cate, but you’re OUT.

  • Anonymous

skirt is waaaay too long on her, makes her look kinda granny-ish.
she coulda dont better with the shoes too

    out :(

  • Anonymous

Oh she’s totally In. So happy to see her back on track.

  • mc90

Yes, she looks lovely—but I liked the 2nd tier. a lot.
    Smooches, Emmylou

  • Anonymous

Hell, she gets an in just for looking so confident. AND she looks dashing in monochrome.

  • http://twitter.com/lauralexis Laura

IN, if only to encourage her in the right direction.

  • sweetlilvoice

Like! And I even like the Grease leggings.

  • Anonymous

Nice suit, but I think Cate can do better.  The look ages her.  Hemline is awful.  I do think the jacket is flattering.  So, Out. :(

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3CGY36NG25QFIZQOLMH7SQTKLU andrew

Well, her version does look better than the original, but still….. too monochromatic and could have used some nice jewelry to soften the look.  Her hair is perfect and the dress is flattering. Wish she’d jump on the ‘hosiery is back in style’ bandwagon.

Reluctantly, out (but just a smidge out)

  • Anonymous

I wish she had kept the middle tier, she would have been completely fierce then. Without the middle tier it looks a little Nancy Reagan. I like the leggins but it may have been too much. So I am ok with her leaving this look for the runway model. An in but not a screaming thanks be Jesus IN. However this look doesn’t make the baby Jesus cry like the last two.

  • http://twitter.com/Merneith Merneith

I think she looks perfect but then I love monochromatic things in general. I do agree that a shorter hem length would have been better. Still I think it’s a solid IN.

  • http://twitter.com/Space_Kitty Space_Kitty

I actually prefer the changes made from the runway version, although I miss the flash of metallic at the waist.  Agreed about the accessories, but since we’re grading on a curve?  IN!

(And if we’re going to nitpick, a little more color on her face, no?)

  • Anonymous

In other words, Cate’s an IN.

  • Anonymous

A yes but the way she wears the tiered dress makes it look like her head is on backwards a la Meryl Streep in Death Becomes Her.

  • Anonymous

IN. Those earrings burn with the fire of a half dozen tiny suns and would redeem a worse ensemble than this one.

What stone do you think they are? Maybe a Mexican fire opal?

I agree that the length of the skirt is unflattering but otherwise she looks lovely. A VAST improvement from her recent fashion misses. She looks splendid in red.

Hmm, lawyer barbie sounds about right.  I missed the interesting elements from the runway version. Cate could have gotten away with satin leggings and a double waist, she would have made that look fab.  Perfect shade of lipstick to go with that suit though.
Not In, but not Out, she’s stuck in the in between place.

IN.  *breathing sigh of relief*  Definitely back on track.

IN. The monochrome of RED is the sophistication of this for me.

  • Jill Roberts

How can you call orange earrings and a red dress match-y?  So unfair.  Also, I’m not convinced that those shoes are actually very red.  IN because the photo made me gasp before the inevitable nitpicks began.

  • Nora Mulllin

The skirt hem needs to be about 3 inches shorter and the jacket hem needs to be re-done entirely as someone effed that up royally. It’s not terrible. And I like the earrings. She get’s a reserved IN if only because Lawyer Barbie couldn’t ever afford Armani Prive.

I love the sleeves and that color is full frontal fierce on her, even if the outfit is a little meh. I think the orange earrings add a nice little pop to the rest of  this subdued, but rather pretty look. It’s not the greatest thing she’s ever worn, but it’s freakin’ Cate Blanchett!! Even if it’s bland for her, it’s still a pretty fabulous get-up compared to what most Hollywoodlets go traipsing around wearing. IN!

  • Anonymous

IN, grudgingly. She doesn’t look bad but she’s certainly not rocking it either. Way to much red, words I thought I’d never say, and the length of the skirt isn’t flattering and it’s really bugging me. Love the color of the earrings, but not with the outfit.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=637520850 Madison Chua

Wow …she, wow, her head is huge! Talk about a lollipop. I never realised how narrow her shoulders are. She can give Nancy Reagan a run for her money. I say, “Out!”

  • Anonymous

Too matchy, matchy and the length and proportions are off. Better, but it’s an out for me.

  • Presumptuous Insect

One of the most lovely outfits I have ever seen, on my favorite actress. I cannot get enough of it.

  • Anonymous

This post presents an integral Project Runway dilemma: do you judge on a person’s outfits in toto or solely the one in front of you at the moment? Every season I go back and forth on either position, and wind up screaming at the judges anyway. I’m going to vote solely on the outfit at hand and say it’s Out for reasons other kittens have voiced. The skirt length is completely unflattering and could have used that second tier. Plus, her facial expression seems to say: Oh dear, you caught me being middle-aged. An In would only be a pity vote and that just feels icky and condescending. It’s not like La Blanchett needs any help being fierce and fabulous. I choose to believe she’s intentionally laying low and just waiting for the perfect moment to spring a jaw-droppingly awe-inspiring creation on us unsuspecting mortals.

  • http://missbethg.wordpress.com/ Beth Ann

I love the original suit better. Without the second tier on the skirt, the suit looks awkward in the middle. There’s no reason for it to pull focus on her stomach like that. She’s a safe, dull in. The outfit could have been sublime with some of the original details kept and some better accessorizing. My first thought was that it looked like a pomo Nancy Reagan suit minus the big hair.

I don’t like it at all. Hate those shoes, red or not. Hemline is awful. Should be a tad shorter & NOT crooked. OUT.

No. I’m beginning to worry about her. Something’s wrong. Her face doesn’t even look good – pasty and shiny. Harlot Mother-of-the-Bride /= mojo back in force.

    Beautiful suit. In!

  • Meagan Smith

Out!  The skirt needs that middle tier to balance out the proportions of the suit.  I do like the earrings.  Next time, Cate.  I expect better of you.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Juline-Débaul/100002426617563 Juline Débaul

Again NEAR-unanimous OUT! When will we just get our shit together and say NO?

Why does the hem of the jacket look so wonky? I do not like the earrings with this suit at all. I think she will score IN at the end, but I will vote OUT because I think she can do much better.

  • Anonymous

I wish she’d tweaked the length of the skirt hem.  But definately  IN

  • Anonymous

I’m not sensing “returned mojo” here at all.  Either she’s just recovering from a GI bug which has left her washed-out and pasty, or her makeup person is exacting revenge for some slight.  I don’t like the suit much and red doesn’t flatter Cate’s coloring at all.  Plus that upswept hem on the jacket is making her look paunchy–and she’s as thin in these photos as I ever remember seeing her.  Frankly this is making me feel less judgmental about the dowdy real estate look from last month.  OUT.

  • sonictofu

IN.  I’m secretly wishing for the leggings, though, anything less boring than matchy shoes.

OUT.  hate the hemline of the top.  its so wrong.

In, but I think the second tier should have stayed. One looks random, two looks deliberate. And the earrings are a bit big.

  • http://www.facebook.com/izzzyy Dixie Murphy Ross

Out. I think she removed the two elements (2nd tier and leggings) that actually made the look interesting.

  • Anonymous

Barely in. I love her in red, but the orangey-red next to her face isn’t flattering and I would love for someone to iron the bottom of her jacket, it’s driving me crazy.

I think she looks mostly great. Skirt length is wrong and I don’t like her hair. The monochrome doesn’t actually bother me, though.

  • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

Oh, man. This is difficult. I think the hem height is going to be what pushes it into OUT territory for me. Cate has a perfect body and yet the hem stops just where it makes legs that cannot possibly BE heavy, LOOK heavy.
