In or Out: Kirsten Dunst in Chloé

Posted on May 19, 2011

Kirsten Dunst attended the “Melancholia” photocall at the Palais des Festivals during the 64th Cannes Film Festival in a Chloé dress paired with Jimmy Choo shoes and our reactions are mixed. Let’s go to the tape:

Chloé Spring 2011 Collection/Model: Melissa Tammerijn (NATHALIE)

Aw, we feel bad. She used to go out looking like ten different shades of crap and she’s really been pulling herself together in the last year or two. This is such a vast improvement over the way she dressed a couple of years ago that we feel bad we don’t unconditionally love it. It’s such a pretty, flirty little dress and it fits her perfectly. It also suits her body and style. But as a look, this isn’t coming together as well as it should. We’re not sure who looks good in a mustard yellow, but we’re positive that Kiki isn’t one of those people. The shoes are killa, but they’re also not the best color choice. Kirsten’s a very pale, washed-out kinda gal and these tones just don’t look all that great against her skin. When you top off the look with a slash of bright red on the mouth, it only serves to highlight how bad the color looks on her. Her hair’s cute (if way too limp) and that ring is adorable, but we think if the dress and shoes were in more flattering shades, we’d be more likely to urge you all to declare her IN. As it is, we’re leaving it up to you. Choose wisely, minions. The fate of absolutely nothing is in your hands.

VOTE NOW!

IN! Color, shmolor!  Quitcher bitchin’, T Lo, she looks GORGE!

OUT! It looks like someone put mustard on a marshmallow!

Minion Opinion on Hilary Swank’s Betty Draper drag was mixed, but IN.

JimMcC:  Thanks for the link — I hadn’t seen that.  Watching it, I felt awful for Kirsten:  imagine the work she put into that film — I doubt any Lars von Trier film is a joy to make, especially for the lead actress.  She had to know as she was listening to him that this was a sickening, game-changing moment.  Now, it will be all about him and his comments, his critics vs his supporters…and the whole film will now be seen through that lens, etc.

Love the dress; I think she looks beautiful.

Totally in. The dress is a flirty dream and I think the red lipstick makes it work. Thumbs down on the shoes, but I can overlook them ’cause the rest is adorable.

GFY did a post on this outfit yesterday and loved it so maybe they helped form my opinion on this, BUT I think she looks really great, no curve required. I absolutely love the dress on her.  I’m glad she didn’t go with flats (that’s what I probably would have done).
      The color is a drag.

      In.

    • Vaniljekjeks

Hmm… I saw this dress on someone else recently and she wore it in white with a belt and it looked almost perfect.  If she added a belt, maybe the coloring of the dress would look less intense.

She’s still IN.  The fit and length are perfect, I just really think this dress needs a belt.

    • http://profiles.google.com/iamandyleigh Andrea Young

Hey, she’ looks like a pretty young woman instead of a school marm or a product of the Salvation Army “free” bin.  She’s pulling that difficult color off, not being jaundiced by it.  A different colored shoe might have been nice, but I’m giving that a pass.

      IN!

    • http://twitter.com/SondheimGeek Colleen Robinson

So in! I love the color and style! Everything works here.

    • vmcdanie

      Damn it. Ok, IN.

I applaud color on the red carpet and I really like her but this is not her color. No one this white can wear mustard. I know because I am this white. I cannot see the fabulous ring you speak of but I’m going to trust that it tips the scales.

    • Anonymous

Mustard yellow is far from my favorite color, but it doesn’t look bad on her. (It would look soooo much worse on me.)   My only complaint is with her shoes — I’d like to see a burgundy shoe instead.  In, but barely.

    • Anonymous

IN, bien sur. I actually LIKE the color quite a lot on her. I don’t think it washes her out at all, particularly with the red lips. It’s reminiscent of Michelle Williams’ mustard Oscar Vera Wang, probably just because it was another blonde girl wearing mustard. But I likey. The shoes not so much, but Kiki looks adorable. So i say IN, MON AMIE!

    • Courtney Hellams

in! she looks cute and fresh!

    • MilaXX

I’m giving this a modest IN. I don’t think the color is that bad on her, but it’s acessirized wrong. I get they were going for with the red lip, but it’s not doing her any facors. A softe peach lip would have been better. She also could have used better. Jewelry. Still she has definitely stepped up her fashion game.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JSGAZPEESHQT47ATH55GNOHHBY Erin

In, folks.  She looks lovely.  The color doesn’t really make her look bad, it just makes you wonder why such a pretty dress isn’t in a pretty color.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_XVMVVOISLIR7V6NZ5C6GRDQZAA Joseph

I agree that everything is working except for the color of the clothes.  I think that the color of the dress is gorgeous and can work for the right person.  Her complexion has a lot of red and pink tones that just doesn’t work well with the yellow and makes it look like a mustard and ketchup ensemble.  Maybe navy would have been better.

    • Anonymous

i guess one could be nitpicky about the shoes (dont love them) and the lips (clash ever-so-slightly with the rest), but i think overall she looks fab. it helps that mustard has been one of my favourite colours for quite some time now. IN!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

    • Anonymous

Yeah, this is upsetting. The style of that dress is so pretty and flattering on her, but that color is just so unbelievably bad for her that I can’t believe she actually wore it. I think a beautiful shade of blue would have been divine on her.
Love the shoes, but their color doesn’t go with the color of the dress.

I’m still giving her an IN, because if these pictures were in black and white, I would say she looks gorgeous.

IN from me, I don’t think that color washes her out at all. She looks lovely. And ditto to whoever said that they feel really sorry for her after that Lars Von Trier debacle. Poor girl.

    • Katelyn B

I like the dress on her actually. The shoes are nice but definitely should be paired with a different outfit. I’m leaning toward IN.

    • Anonymous

I love it!  FOr the South of France in May it is a perfect color.  The jolt of the mustard with the pale skin is edgy but pretty to me.  She wore a gown in “Marie Antionette” a similiar shade of mustard in satin that was all kinds of crazy gorgeous on her.  I also am feeling really bad for her having to sit next to her director as he made such ill-timed and inappropriate “jokes” yesterday.  She handled it better than I would have.  And now he is banned…..

    • Anonymous

I would like to see the hair pin she has on. I wonder if it matches her ring?  I like the dress on her, hate the shoes, hate the lipstick.  In the cover image to the post she looks much older than she is, and I think it’s the makeup. Why so harsh Kirsten?

      I guess it’s an in.

    • Tashina Savage

IN! Big IN. I actually Loooove the color and I think it looks very striking against her pale skin and red lips. I would wear this in a heartbeat.

    • Randel Wiley

IN! I actually think the color works for her. Nontraditional color, yes, but I think it looks good.

    • Anonymous

Out. I actually think the color of the dress looks great on her, but it would have been great if she had a done a much more vibrant, unexpected shoe color like an olive green or royal purple. Her hair is sad. I don’t think an up-do would have been appropriate, but maybe a braid. And for Christ sakes, throw on a necklace!

    • Ryen DeStefano

In. Totally reminds me of Michelle William’s Vera Wang Oscar dress. It’s flirty and fun too. I think she looks great.

    • http://twitter.com/TraciRai Traci Rai

IN, I think the color of the dress is fun, and she’s wearing the only nude shoe I haven’t hated in months because at least the design is interesting and not just a pair of pumps I might wear to work.

    • Anonymous

In, girl needs a tan though.

    • http://twitter.com/lizaboowears Lizzy’s Closet

In. One: she’s looking a bit like my idol, Debbie Harry. Two: it’s a pretty, flirty dress, well-fitted in a good shape for her. Three: the color is a risk, and although not a slam dunk, not a travesty, either. I do wish she had kept the ballet sleeve, however.

    • Anonymous

It’s not just that the mustard gas is making my eyes burn. Or that the “nude” shoes make her skin look larval. Check the ugh-inducing swaying bulge of the zipper under her arm. Outtety-outtety-out.

Sorry to have to say it, but OUT, for the color.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.parker Sara Parker

I love the original dress.  I wish she hadn’t changed the sleeves, and while I can understand preferring a color since she’s so pale, MUSTARD?  I think the shoes would have been okay if she’d gone with like a royal blue or other jewel tone.

    • Anonymous

IN! I really like this. That dress is just adorable and I don’t think the color looks as bad on her as you guys say. I actually really like the color. I’m not a huge fan of the nude shoes, though. And the hair isn’t great. But for the most part, she looks really cute.

    • Anonymous

I think she looks fantastic and I love the color. Shoes are a misstep, but big fat IN.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1303837450 Lauren Dorsee Dillon

I love the dress, the shoes, the jewelry, even the hair; but, the color is unfortunate and should be outlawed for wasps if not all white women. I’m still going to give her an in because, other than the baby’s-first-poop shade, she looks very pretty.

    • Anonymous

I’m also voting her as IN regardless of what she’s wearing because of the way she handled herself as she sat next to Lars von Trier making sympathetic remarks about Nazis.  I felt bad for her.

    • Anonymous

IN! I love the dress on her! She looks fantastic!

    • Anonymous

Dead on with the color.  She doesn’t have the skin for it.  The same dress in a Kelly green, or any shade of blue, or red, or even a spring-like pink or light green… it would be lovely. But the color is just off.

Oh, IN anyway. The dress is too pretty, despite the color, not to be in.

    • Anonymous

IN. I think she looks great – I like the color of the dress and lipstick (on her, and together), though the shoes are admittedly not great. I’m as pale as she is (if not paler), and am surprised how much I like this color on her as I can’t imagine wearing it myself…but she looks fresh and very occasion-appropriate.

    • aussiegal77

Can’t say I love this look.  Preferred the dress with the cap sleeves instead of sleeveless.  I like that colour but not sure it works with her.  I love the shoes but in beige it just looks drab.  OUT, I’m afraid.

Disagree. I think the mustard yellow looks great on her.  The shoes aren’t the best color I agree, but I don’t even notice that with how great she looks.

The shade does make her skin look kinda weird…all pinkish…but I have a bit of a thing for mustard yellow clothing…in fact, I’m wearing a vest with that particular shade right now! So I’m just gonna own my bias here, and declare her…

      IN!

    • Paula Knight

That color on her fights with her hair.  Plus, it burns my retinas.  OUT.

    • Louise Isselé

      In! Love the colour.

    • http://www.myblackfriendsays.com myblackfriendsays

It looks way better on the model–OUT.

Half and half. Dress: yes. Shoes: no.

    • http://twitter.com/IfIwasasculptor Erin Leahy

IN!! I for one happen to love mustard yellow. and the shoes were nice. y’all are just prejudice against nude shoes, admit it.

    • http://profiles.google.com/trashilove { edi } ilovetrash

looks nice from far away, from close up the skin & the outfit kind of clash….. particularly the skin & the shoes….. but mostly it looks nice. & it’s risky for just about anyone to wear yellow.

    • Tiffany Stoik

Totally IN, and I disagree, I think the color looks great on her.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Katherine-Lavender/553350310 Katherine Lavender

There are so many nasty mustard/puce/beige clashing colours going on there I feel queasy.

      (That’s an OUT btw)

    • Anonymous

IN.  I love that color on her.  Not so crazy about the show color.

    • Christina Brennan

A narrow IN for the dress, a huge OUT for the shoes.  I feel like if the shoes were an actual color, rather than a non-color, the dress would have looked better on her.  I still like the dress but the flesh toned shoes make her too pinky pale for the mustard to work to full effect.

IN! - good it’s only Trier who’s banned from the festival..

I LOOOOVE mustard yellow, so IN!

      in.  i want that dress.

OUT. Kiki looks grey in some of these photos and the hands and feet made me wince.

    • Margot Brose

She’s rocking the dress, but the fried hair, the makeup, and the shoes have got to go. But still, the dress makes this, in spite of the fact everything else nearly breaks it, so… in.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1374511853 Sara Yungwirth

well it could be better but she looks cute. In

    • Judy_J

She would have looked better if she’d kept the original white.  Blondes look great in white, and that is a great dress.  I’m happy to see that her shoes fit, but wish she would have done something with her toes if she was going to show them off.  She’s close, but not close enough for an IN.  I’m saying OUT, but gently.

    • Anonymous

IN! I actually really like that color on her.

    • Anonymous

IN for going down the right path.  Totally agree about the coloring, though.

    • Anonymous

I think she looks ok.  I hate the nude shoes and lack of jewels.  This dress would be better on her in a rich blue/green.  She doesn’t seem to be aging very well, probably all the smokes.

    • Sharon Weissburg

IN IN IN IN IN IN IN. I love that color and think it only requires healthy helping of attitude to pull it off. Granted, she doesn’t pull it off quite as well as someone like Michelle Williams, who pulled it off in legendary fashion at the Oscars a few years back, but I like it on Kirsten.

    • Anonymous

OUT. The color is working against her. In a shade of blue, pink or even white, this would have been a way IN. This color would work on someone with darker skin and hair. She’s heading in the right direction. The fit and style of the dress good choices for her. I’ll give her a pass on the hair.

    • Anonymous

IN…but just barely. It the color of the dress was flattering it’d be seriously in. Beige shoes on her aren’t good either. I too have been “blessed” with the uber pale skin and I don’t allow beige come anywhere near me.

    • http://www.joannao.blogspot.com JoannaOC

IN! I like it, and she is standing up straight! so often she slumps. She looks pretty and happy. I can’t wear that mustard color next to my skin either, but I still love it.

    • http://profiles.google.com/mochizukisan kyasarin mochizuki

Oh, man. So, so close. If only it weren’t for that color, which is horrible on her, this would be an easy IN.

However, I only really have a problem with the color.

However, that color is a major problem on her. It is the Godzilla of colors, marching through the Tokyo of her otherwise adorable look, smashing cars, burning buildings, squishing screaming, running tiny humans, and knocking trains off tracks.

Geh! Decisions! I can’t! She’s INOUT, the needle lying right on the border between the two sides on the gage of fashion.

Pretty dress, wrong color, but I’m giving her a PASS for sitting there in that dress while Lars von Trier went cuckooshit right next to hear.

    • Anonymous

Color is all wrong from top to bottom.OUT.

    • Anonymous

Out.  The dress is the wrong color for her.  Her hair color is wrong for her, too; I think a dark shade would be more flattering to her pretty face and frame it better.  The color of the shoes is wrong, like you said, plus her feet are just not gorgeous enough to pull off that kind of close-up.  The only positive here is the cut of the dress.

    • Anonymous

       OUT

    • Lisa

Hmmm… both IN and OUT.  This is a clear example of where color can be paramount. The dress and the shoes are gorgeous – except for the colors!  Make that dress navy?  Fabulous!  The shoes in silver?  They’d be divine.  Her hair and makeup look beautiful, her styling is wonderful here – so it’s really just the shoe and dress color that I have issues with.

    • Rina Olivestone

       color shmolor – she’s IN

This looks fab on video/film - not so much in still photography.  She looked vibrant on television in this.  In the photo, I get to pick it apart and hate the lipstick, the over-bleached hair, the shoes.  But I have to give her an IN because in motion, she looked great!

    • Tina Tian

       IN.

Agree that the color of the dress isn’t as good as it could be, but she looks adorable!

The shoes aren’t a great color, but it doesn’t take away from the overall look too much.

    • http://profiles.google.com/rachelruthlee Rachel Lee

In! The ring is amazingly cute, and I don’t think mustard yellow looks that bad on her. The shoes… well if I concentrate hard enough, I can ignore them.

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

Pretty dress, not crazy about the color on her, but not a deal breaker. IN

    • http://profiles.google.com/sauchih Sau-Chih Feng

The dress is cute, but the color is not for her. She’d look better in a cool shade, maybe green or blue or purple or even a wine red. But that yellow is just a difficult yellow to pull off, I don’t understand why designers seem to love it.

Oh Kristen, honey, you are totally OUT! Neither the dress nor the shoes work for her. Yellow mustard color is so unflattering on her. But I like her little flower ring. it’s CUTE!

Everything works but the color of the dress, but it’s not a deal-breaker for me – IN.

I agree this is not a color for her (maybe it works on a redhead – I would say a deep, purply shade of red), but she’s IN.

IN – I think she looks great.  Could use a belt though.

    • Daniel Bayer

I think she looks great – but the whole thing is SO reminiscent of Michelle Williams’s Oscar dress from a few years back. That was my first thought when I looked at this, and that is not what a pretty young starlet wants people to be thinking at the premiere of her new (reportedly stunning) movie at Cannes. But the more I think about it, the more I like it, or at the very least find nothing wrong with it. She looks pretty great. So she’s IN, but just barely.

    • http://profiles.google.com/thisiscelia Celia

Really? I think (with the exception of her hair) she looks great! I think the color is good and I love the shoes! IN. Hair is sloppy, though.

It’s not aresounding OUT, but it’s still out. At first I thought it was the neck up that was ruining the look, but then I realized it was the color, I just happen to really like that saturated mustard in that dress and fooled myself into thinking it worked for her. It doesn’t.

She looks fabulous. I would wear that outfit in a heartbeat, color and all. I have no qualms with mustard yellow.
