AMPAS Tribute to Sophia Loren in Beverly Hills

Posted on May 05, 2011

This week, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences paid tribute to a lady that is BEYOND tributes.

Sophia Loren with her two sons Carlo Ponti Jr. and Edoardo Ponti

We adore that old broad. Cute sons too. We’d have things to say about her outfit but

A) We are not worthy, and

B) It’s been a pretty standard Sophia uniform for a couple of decades now. Sheer sleeves, choker, major boob action, sparkles and big tinted glasses. If she changed it now, we wouldn’t recognize her as Sophia. The only thing we’ll give a thumbs down to are the … well, we don’t know how else to describe them; beaded shoulder pads?

Let’s see how some other ladies did, knowing they couldn’t compete with a DIVA LEGEND.

Christina Ricci

Cute. Simple. A complete 180 from her outrageous getup at the Met Gala the other night. She’s obviously coming down from that fashion high and isn’t trying to exert herself. The only thing we’re not crazy about is the limp hair.

Debi Mazar and Gabrielle Corcos

LUV. HUH. That’s such a great dress. Striking and stylish, but it looks like it’s easy to wear. We’re not entirely sold on the multi-paneled skirt, though. We like his jacket and the three-button collar he’s sporting, but you need a neck-and-a-half to pull that off.

Eva Mendes in Oscar de la Renta Fall 2011

We really love this dress. Stunning color. It really needs a belt, though.

Are hair stylists in Hollywood on strike or something? Because man, there have been some seriously sad-looking heads on the RC lately.

You know, I never realized how gay I was until discovering your blog. I remember watching A Countess from Hong Kong on Sundays after church with my tuna fish sandwich–unknowingly crushing on Marlon Brando and trying to draw pictures of Sophia Loren on the back of my napkin.

    • You are too much! I always look forward to your replies!

      • Lisa

        Me too! Scotty’s awesome!

Scottyf, honey, I just nearly accidentally flagged you when I went to LIKE your comment! Thank goodness a small confirmation window popped up and said something like, “Oh, girl, did you really, seriously mean to FLAG Scottyf? Because we don’t THINK so.” (Not the exact words.) Whew.

(What would’ve happened if I had? Will you have been frog-marched from your home and interrogated by TLo’s hired thugs? Yikes.) 🙂

      • Anonymous

Ha! — Looking at the number of ‘likes’ you generate, scottyf, it seems that if I had flagged you (accidentally, of course) — *I* would be the one interrogated, etc.! 🙂
Or at the very least, I’d get an emailed photo of one of TLos’ cats eyeing me disapprovingly.

        • scottyf

I am completely overwhelmed and humbled.
As for being interrogated by T&Lo’s Flag Squad: we can only assume that any thugs hired by those two would be cute and well dressed…so by all means fag–err, I mean–flag away! LOL

Love, love, LOVE the Oscar de la Renta.

    • Rhoda

It SAYS you’re Gotham Tomato. There’s no need to sign your post. Unless you really, REALLY think something about your name or response is uniquely clever.

I LOVE that dress on Debi Mazar!! She always manages to pull off her look of vamp/indie actress/sultry 40’s screen goddess. I love her. Her hubby looks really good but a man with a thicker neck and shoulders would hve filled it out more. But he looks good. Their liitle cooking show is a hoot.

I don’t know who she is but that is some SERIOUS fashion tribute to the ’40s going on, I agree. For a minute I thought I was seeing the reincarnation of Ava Gardner. Bravo!

I love Sophia, but I wish she had gotten some black shoulder pads sewn in.
Christina on the other hand could have put a little more effort into this look. The shoes & bag are boring and the hair is lackluster.
Debi on the the hand is seriously bringing it. Love the dress and the whole look. Hubby is okay.
Eva’s dress gorgeous but needs a thin, black belt. Hair could use a little zhushing.

    • Anonymous

Yes, the visable shoulder pad bugs. The whole cap sleeve business needed to be lined.

      • Anonymous

The all-too-visible shoulder pads are a major mistake — and surprising, too, considering it’s Sophia Loren.

  • Judy_J

La Sophia is divine! I even forgive the beaded shoulder pads. I was watching “It Happened in Naples” the other day, and she is just so adorable in that film! In her autobiography, she says she owes her shape to pasta. I say it’s probably more good genes, but if she’s willing to give pasta the credit, who’s going to argue with that? It sure made me start consuming more pasta in hopes that I’d develop like she did…alas, the pasta diet didn’t work so well for me.

    • Anonymous

Judy J — By sheer coincidence, I am making Sophia Loren’s pasta recipe for dinner tonight! It was featured in a magazine years ago, and is a favorite of ours. (It’s an uncooked sauce that marinates for 4 hours…very fresh and light.) Don’t know if it’s the source of our stunning beauty or not 😉 — but we always feel healthy and happy after eating it! Almost as healthy and happy as Sophia always looks.

  • Elise Arndt

Christina Ricci need to go back to bangs. They minimized her large forehead.

    • fashionablylate

I think she looks better with bangs too, they really make her eyes stand out.

  • j to the da

Speaking of Sophia…. VIRGINS vs VIXENS anyone?

    • fashionablylate

      Yes PLEASE!!!

  • Lala

They broke the mold with her.

  • MarFar

I wonder if Sarah Palin wishes she were Sophia Loren — the tan, the glasses, the big hair…?

  • Eva is really going for ‘fashion girl’ lately. It’s so not her.

Wednesday’s hair colour is all wrong. Also her look makes me sleepy.

Only Sophia Loren can look sexy while being kissed by her two sons.

Is it just me or do Christina Ricci’s proportions look really strange? I don’t know if it’s the dress or the camera angle or what …

    • diva341

Yes, it’s an unfortunate camera angle and, I think, an unfortunate dress length. She looks short and stumpy with little bitty limbs on a long torso.

  • mjude

i will always BOW DOWN to Miss Loren. She is one of my all time faves. LOVE HER!

  • Oh, I’m so glad you luv Deb, because I luv huh, too. Love that dress, as well.

  • Anonymous

I’m just sorry that Sophia isn’t grabbing Oscar’s crotch. It would be everything I expect from this woman.

  • Alison

The dress on that Debi…sorry, don’t know who she is… is fab. The dress just looks like it wraps round and the part of the skirt that goes under the wraparound is flat to avoid bulk.

    Sophia looks amazing.

  • Totally agree on the hair. Ricci looks like she forgot to condition, for about a week. I didn’t even notice Sophia’s bedazzled shoulder pads, but I too, wonder why….totally agree about Eva’s dress. She needed that little black belt…

  • diva341

Not a big fan of Eva Mendes’s dress on her – color is fine, but cut is not advantageous for her. On the other hand, I think it would look really great on Michelle Obama.

  • Anonymous

Neh. I like Eva’s dress, but I feel like it could’ve been better hemmed a few inches higher. And with a belt, like you said. And fix the hair.
I LOVE Debi’s dress and her pose. No pee-pose for this dame! Looks very modely. 🙂

  • Breeze

Sophia Loren is a goddess. Put any other 70 year old in that dress and hairdo and we’d be laffing ourselves silly. Love that Italian skin.

Eva should have worn a belt; Christina should have washed her hair!

She’s my idol, and makes me so happy that I have Roman roots. We have the same figure and nose, and I hope I age (or at least have the money one day to look like I’ve aged…) as well as she has!

…there were other people there? I’m sorry, I couldn’t see past all of Sophia’s AMAZING.

Eff it. I hereby VOW to age as well as she.

  • ask

All of her fans might get mad.. But there is some wonky boob area in that first pic

  • Sophia looks really amazing for 77

    • Capita

She’s really 81. Cut 4 yrs off her age between her 1st son whom she had at 40 and her 2nd, whom she had at 40 4 yrs later. Used to hate her: was a Lollo fan. But now I detest the latter and adore her.

      • Anonymous

81? IMDB has her at 77. I guess we could compromise and just say that she looks incredible for a 79 year old (or 69, or 59…)

        • Capita

Indeed. But she was a contestant at Miss Italia 1949. You were supposed to be 18. Was she 15? Like Ann Miller for «Stage Door», she might have added a few years to her real age in order to participate but I don’t think so. I WAS there. When she was Sofía: Lollo ’27; la Loren ’29; la Mangano, ’30; Lucia (Bosè) ’31. It doesn’t take away from her fabulousness: it adds to it. By the way, Pampanininni and Rossi Drago ’25. The sisters Pier Angeli and Pavan were younger. Me? Born 1950. Queer 1950.

  • Montserrat

Sophia Loren! One of my faves!

  • Anonymous

I usually think Christina looks cute…but idk..she looks kind of alien – big headed, long necked and dropped shoulders. Maybe it’s the camera angle. Her forehead is not her best feature so the limp hair isn’t helping, and the straps and neckline are not flattering on her either. The length of the dress is too long for her too..because she’s so short. Makes her look kind of dumpy.

Debbie looks fantastic. Perfect dress for her…it suits her hair and makeup.

Sophia still knows how to work it!

  • Lisa

You can’t ever, EVER say anything bad about Sophia, so good on you for keeping hush-hush about that!

In other news, I think Christina Ricci is WAY too dressed down – this is Sophia! You best show some respect!

Now Debbie Mazar? LOVE! That’s how to look glam without being over the top and outshining the queen!

  • Anonymous

Love love LOVE Ms. Loren. None of us are worthy to breathe her air.

    Debi Mazar looks awesome.
The rest? Mmmm, okay, but not great.

  • C.jean

I’m thrilled to see Debi Mazar’s wearing Claire McCardell. No one seems to (maybe it’s hard to find them?), but I’ve coveted those dresses for years. Great design.

  • bitchybitchybitchy

What a totally fabulous broad-Sophia can wear whatevre she damn well pleases. BOW.DOWN.

  • Gbsea

Serious question: is Christina Ricci a dwarf?

  • Anonymous

Speaking of Sophia, what’s the news of that Virgins vs. Vixens? It’s almost been a year!
