Like any Netflix producers or lifestyle entrepreneurs would, Harry and Meghan visited Bondi Beach, the site of a terrorist attack in December, where they met with volunteer first responders from the Bondi Surf Bathers’ Life Saving Club, as well as with survivors and the president of the Sydney Jewish Museum.

We are not Jewish, English or Australian, so we won’t claim to speak for anyone, but this strikes us as exceedingly odd and tone-deaf, considering that part of the reason for this tour is that their lifestyle brand As Ever is planning product launches in Australia. We just don’t think you can combine the Sussexes’ business ventures and celebrity-based lifestyle with the kind of statesmanship and diplomacy that royal tours require. We thought that was the whole point of them leaving royal life in the first place; they wanted the kind of control over their lives that royalty can’t bestow. And while we’ve had our critiques of their efforts as television producers, we broadly support the idea that they should be free to promote their businesses and philanthropic efforts however they see fit. But this is statesmanship and they both famously broke off from having any responsibilities in that arena, so there’s no way to see this as anything but a couple of dilettantes who want it both ways. Production deals, product launches and red carpets, but also concerned-face photo opps at healthcare facilities and sites of terrorist attacks. It’s unseemly. One of the things their supporters say in their defense is to look at the crowds that form to see them, but there really aren’t any; not on the level of a royal tour and not even on the level of international stardom. This is PR for product launches. Bear in mind that Meghan is using affiliate links to sell the items she’s wearing on this trip, included a MasterChef Australia guest-hosting gig on this trip, and will also be hosting a wellness retreat tonight. “Tickets for the event, which includes yoga, manifestation and sound healing, start from A$2,699 ($1,912) per person.” In shallower news (although we’re not sure how you can get much shallower than that), this is probably one of the cutest outfits Meghan’s worn in ages, but those sneakers are goofy as hell.
