All right, Cynthia Erivo. We’ll give you this one. The Wicked: For Good star has been interpreting and reinterpreting her Elphaba costumes for nigh on a year at this point, going back to last year’s Wicked publicity tour. As you might know (and shame on you if you don’t), we have a major bug up our ass regarding cosplay as a promotional tool because it replaces the self-expression of style for the corporate synergy of branding. But one thing we don’t mind is when a star takes the tone or aesthetic of a film and uses it to inspire her style choices. Like so:

There’s not a bit of classic witchiness in this all-black look, even with the hat. If anything, it’s got more of a New Wave Witch vibe to it, which has nothing whatsoever to do with the aesthetic of the film. We love it. It’s sharp, it’s memorable, it’s extremely well-suited to her, and it evokes the project without slavishly recreating its look.
