Forgive us, Hailee Steinfeld. Apparently, we weren’t really familiar with your game. Wait. That can’t be true. We’ve been covering your red carpet career for as long as you’ve had one. We think it’s safe to say a decade-plus of opinionating upon your dress choices would leave us more than familiar with your game. And yet, we had no reason to expect this exquisiteness:

To be fair, we could quibble with a lot of this, not least with the idea that this is an Iris van Herpen ripoff, or that the greige color is kind of dreary, or even that the volume threatens to overwhelm her. We’d probably like it more if the “petals” were a little more even in how they lay and drape. Still, having quibbled our way through all of that, we remain impressed. She’s usually gone for the slinkiest frocks she could lay her hands on, but Sinners has probably been the best-reviewed film of hers since True Grit and it’s nice to see her going for a more prestige sort of look.
