Over the years, while covering the style choices of Tracee Ellis Ross, we occasionally encounter a “She’s just like her mother” sentiment and it always puzzles us. Obviously, in terms of facial resemblance, she’s clearly the daughter of the legendary Diana Ross. But her entire persona, career, and personal style are very different from her mother’s. They’d have to be. She’s a comedic actress and her mother is an iconic singer and performer. But if you need more convincing that Tracee Ellis Ross is very much her own woman, allow us to remind you that the senior Miss Ross wore this last night:

She is her own special flavor and she always had been; quirky, goofy and exuberant in response to her mother’s theatrically divalicious style. The extreme pleating on the pants isn’t entirely to our liking, but we love how offbeat the shapes are. The hat and the cummerbustle (it’s a word now) really make the look.
