Oscars 2025 Countdown: Zoe Saldaña-ology

Time to return once again to one of our favorite – and oldest blogging traditions. Like our “IN or OUT” posts, the “Ology” posts are an old holdover from our Project Runway fanblogging days, when we’d compile all of the finalists efforts from the season to examine their overall aesthetic and the direction of their final collection. When we become red carpet bloggers, it morphed into an awards season retrospective of the most stylish Oscar nominees; a way of looking at how each star navigated their own awards campaign, with a (usually weak or misguided) attempt to predict how they’ll dress on the big night. Let’s start off with a close read on Emilia Perez star and Best Supporting Actress nominee Zoe Saldaña’s traipse through awards season.

Sometimes its worth noting when an Oscar campaign kicks off strong and early. It’s an indication that the star and/or the film’s PR team feel that they have a shot. Practically from the moment Emilia Perez premiered, it seemed like the trio of actresses at its center were being strongly positioned for awards consideration. Zoe has always had a quirky, unusual sense of style, so it’s of some interest to see how – or even if – she tamped down on some of her wilder preferences.

She made a couple of concessions to “normal” awards season style. Like most people with offbeat style preferences, when she tries to tone them down, she tends to go minimalist or generic.

She loves asymmetry and unusual color blocking or textile combinations.

She also loves brown and black – a LOT.

She seems to have a thing for scrolldown surprises; outfits that start off conventional and get weirder as you go down.

As much as we love it when a star takes risks and expresses themself through their public style choices, it pains us to have to admit…

We think she’s much better off when she goes conventional and sleek.

Or even conventional, short and sassy.

Saint Laurent does the best by her and she’s likely to wear the brand on the big night since she has a longstanding relationship with them.

We just hope her love of weirdness doesn’t overwhelm her choices, as it sometimes tends to do.

We predict she’ll be in black, it’ll be sleek, probably have a Saint Laurent label attached, and have one ruffle or other sort of asymmetrical element. We hope she gets a gown that allows her to be weird in the way she likes but chic in the way the Oscars demand.
