We felt that the first season of this show had two strikes against it in the minds of most people; one fair and one unfair. The fair one had to do with the insane amount of money Amazon had paid for the rights to some of Tolkien’s marginalia. When you break records for production costs, people are going to come at you for just about any flaw. This is right, as far as we’re concerned. For what they paid, the final product should be incredible television. In our opinion, it was “only” very good. The second one, which struck us as a little unfair, was the comparison to House of the Dragon. We said all along that the writing and acting were better on the latter series, but we think any comparison that doesn’t address the massive style and tonal differences between the two works renders complaints a little shallow. Martin’s work avoids the fantastical as much as it can. It’s almost purely a political story, with only a few fantasy elements (not least being the big frikking dragons). Tolkien’s story is the opposite: almost entirely about fantasy and magic and fantastical beings. We’re happy – thrilled even – to see that they’re leaning even further into this distinction. While we have some quibbles about some rather important creative decisions (one or two casting choices, the insanely compressed timeline), we love it when our Tolkien is full of wonder and horror. This will continue to piss off Tolkien purists and annoy HotD fans, but we still love it.

ABOUT SEASON 2:
Sauron has returned. Cast out by Galadriel, without army or ally, the rising Dark Lord must now rely on his own cunning to rebuild his strength and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power, which will allow him to bind all the peoples of Middle-earth to his sinister will. Building on Season 1’s epic scope and ambition, Season 2 of Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power plunges even its most beloved and vulnerable characters into a rising tide of darkness, challenging each to find their place in a world that is increasingly on the brink of calamity. Elves and dwarves, orcs and men, wizards and Harfoots… as friendships are strained and kingdoms begin to fracture, the forces of good will struggle ever more valiantly to hold on to what matters to them most of all… each other.
THE RINGS OF POWER returns August 29 on Prime Video.
